We are planning a trip to Europe next month visiting family and friends. We would like to show some pictures on their TV set with our iPod touch, using the Composite AV cable. Since the voltage is different (220 V) in Europe would my iPod be immediately converted to run without harm on the higher voltage?

NTSC vs PAL

You won't have any problems with the voltage. Apple products, like most computers etc. can handle dual voltage.
But if you want to show your pictures on a European TV you have set the iPods TV Signal to PAL. (--> Settings/Video/TV Signal)
