As the Xeons are seemingly being crippled by things like AVX, is interest going to go down the pan?

I ask as I may have a quantity of 6-core E5465's to shift... at least that's all i've been finding so far... but, they may also be good pickups if anyone wants to try delidding I thought? I could supply them in "burner packs" to practice with for low cost.

Cheap gateway to 12 core bliss, or a cheap way to make sure you don't screw up that expensive x5690.

Also, anyone got any ideas how to test them? Feels like hotswapping them on my single core tray is going to be a pain.

You'll need a motherboard compatible with the CPUs to test them or use your Mac Pro. That's the only way to test them.

Don't ever hot swap a CPU. Power down a computer and disconnect it from power before swapping. Be sure to apply thermal paste before booting.

Given how little they are worth. I can't imagine it would be worth the time to list them separately or put much effort into them. I'd either just list them at $4.75 each with free shipping on eBay or sell them as a wholesale lot. People buying old server parts usually know their tech and aren't going to care about sales pitches just price.

Don't leave them on too long. I've done it plenty of times to test boot. Just pop on the heatsink. The thermal paste just fills miniscule voids to prevent hot spots and improve efficiency.
