When (finally) looking to see if my powerbook battery was part of the recall I realized that my powerbook will not boot if the battery is not present. This isn't a major problem now, but if/when the battery does kick the bucket, the computer will not be usable.

Will applecare cover this? I have about 8 months left on it, or would they refuse because I can still use the computer in its current state?

Why don't you call AppleCare and ask them? Or take it in to the genius bar and ask them? I think that they would repair that issue.
