I just upgraded my iCloud to iCloud Drive. Will I be able to access my files in the future with an Android device?

There's no way in hell that this will happen.

But the real answer to that should be : we don't know.

Will Nintendo release Mario Kart for PS4? Will McDonald's start letting Burger King sell Big Macs? Will Disney license Mickey Mouse to Warner Bros.?

iCloud is pretty specifically a selling point to get people to choose an iPhone over a phone that isn't. Allowing access to it from Android would be worse than pointless from Apple's perspective.

Will Apple make iTunes for Windows?

Uh, wait, wait. Bad example. Forget I said anything.

How much money does iTunes on Windows bring to Apple ? Billions per year.

How much money would iCloud on Android bring to Apple ? Probably losses in terms of millions.

I'm not clear how it would lose Apple money at all, but I could see some Android users being attracted to buying a Macbook/iMac if they knew they could access their files in their Android phone.

At best it could only be a view only sort of thing since you couldn’t actually use it properly (android lacking all of the iCould functionality that iOS has). Apple has enough motive to develop iCloud for Android as it would have to develop iWork or iLife for other platforms.

It’s not comparable to iTunes since the only real commercial aspect of iCloud is the monthly storage aspect (iTunes match is a possible one, but that isn’t going to be useful for android since iTunes match is for iTunes). iTunes on the other hand was basically a way to get people to buy Apple hardware (iPods, iPhones, and iPads), and media content (music, movies, and apps). Far greater commercial potential.

It’s not really a native usage situation though. iTunes for example, has no interaction with Android (or other phones) and Apple pretty much avoids supporting other mobile platforms as much as possible. There was a big deal a few years ago when Palm tried to fake out iTunes so that it would be recognized. Apple went out of their way to stop that and ensure that the only support was going to be iOS devices. There only Android development Apple is even doing is the Beats music app and that was solely because it was acquired. I bet that development of that app in general will have nothing to do with development of Mac stuff in general. It’s going to be it’s own corner.

It would increase usage of the iCloud network, which would mean they might need to add and upgrade their servers, and it wouldn't sell any hardware in the process.

So, no.

iCloud doesn't even offer anything new. It's just a cloud storage platform. The entire purpose of the cloud is that it's accessible anywhere, any time.

What person would use iCloud drive and pay for extra storage when other services like Dropbox and Google Drive offer the same thing and are available on more devices?

The point was that it wasn't a dumb question and deserves discussion. Based on all the posts since mine I can see that I wasn't wrong.

So, no.

But based on this logic, Pages and Numbers for the web shouldn't exist. And yet they did that.

I don't think there will be iCloud for Android either, but this isn't the reason. They've already proven they'll devote server power to things that don't run on Apple hardware.
