It will not be just a software update.
They will also released a new iphone like they do every year.
New phone. There's no way they can keep the current hardware considering the new generation of smartphones comming out. What I'm really hoping for is a higher resolution screen, 5 megapixel camera with some type of built in zoom feature and HD video recording, a flash would be nice but I doubt it, faster processor, and one of the most important to me, a better battery!

New phone for sure, but i thought dates for wwdc had not been stated for sure yet.

OP: There have been a lot of rumors going around for June 22nd as a possible announcement date for the iPhone. If so, it should be on sale within a couple weeks after that.
OS 4.0 already brings a camera zoom to the 3GS.
And the new iPhone will have 720p recording and a flash (based off the information found in the 4.0 SDK).
