Does anyone think we will get a normal headless mac. The iMac is nothing more than a MBP, and having with the Mac Pro 4 cores is a bit of overkill for alot of people. Does anyone think that Apple will make a Mac Pro with the Core 2 Duo Desktop variant as a option? That way we could get normal desktop performance, PCI-E graphics etc., without paying for more than we need with the Mac Pro.

Probably not.

Its Mac Mini -> iMac -> Mac Pro.

Would be nice to see a Mac Pro Midi or something  Mac Pro design (cheese grater) in something a bit bigger than me Mini, and possibly upright standing.

yeah But not anytime soon.

I hope they release something in between a mini and a MacPro. The mini is too expensive, think of the PC I could build for that kind of money! While the MacPro is definately a better deal, but like most people, it's over kill for me.

Isn't an upright standing desktop what the industry has worked so hard to replace with innovative designs...hey, I know, lets make it beige too! :D

I do see the point the original poster made about an inbetween, but I would think most people that want more computing than an iMac would want the power and flexibility of a MacPro. Remember, most of us at MacRumors are not "most people". Unfortunately for us Apple needs to cater to a general public with their product offerings somewhat and can only focus on a few niches at once.

we need a shuttle sized thing with a 16x pcie slot two HD bays and 4x ram slots that uses conroe, but it's not going to happen as apple was burnt by the cube.

I consider the iMac a different type of machine than the Mac mini or the Mac Pro. The way I see it, the iMac is a consumer desktop, and the Mac mini and Mac Pro are the consumer and pro (respectively) headless desktops.

I think there needs to be a headless desktop in between the Mac mini and Mac Pro. Almost like a headless iMac.

I started a thread, though there are many of them on this, The Paris Mac Revolution: off with its head. I stated specs and price and there was a lot of debate on it, just as there has been in the other threads. I really want it to happen. But I doubt it will. Maybe next year or so. What someone pointed out and I see as more of a possibility is the Mini staying, going back down in price just a bit, and a new Media Server Tivo type machine in the next 12-24 months that has more power and capabilities, but is not quite as expandable as we want. As far as a true headless Mac with reasonable power and room for two HDDs and dedicated graphics, I'm not holding my breath.

I think you'll find Apples high-end desktop is upright standing.

If you want something better spec'd than the Mini, but not as kitted out as a Mac Pro, although with the expandability - your going to need more space (non-laptop HDD's and drives) - which means more space.

I personally would rather it get taller, and leaner - than wider and flatter.

And whilst on your comment about making it beige as well, I believe I said it should resemble the look of the Mac Pro.

If it were not for the applications and drivers available for the Mac, I would get
a Sun Ultra 20 M2 "workstation" for $995.

Here

Probably not until there are enough of the headless Mac threads that everybody starts shooting the thread starter. ;)

LOL - when its released let the 'it whines, its hisses, it buzzes, it was responsible for my divorce' threads begin.

While the current iMac is basically a MBP. That won't be the case for too much longer. Chances are it will get a Conroe and differentiate itself from the notebook line.

As has been said before, the mobile yonah gave Apple the chance to get Intels in Macs ASAP.

It would be nice for Apple to put something in between, but that is not there market. Sure we here would like it, but most of population could care less about multiple hard drives and swapping video cards. And that is who the middle of the road machine is for.

It may hurt, but that is the truth.

I'm the opposite. I'd still like Apple to release a media centric "pizza box" headless box with specs similar to the high end iMac that would integrate nicely into a A/V shelf and hook up easily to an HDTV.

(Or use it on a desk with a regular monitor).

Yeah, I'd like to see that, too. But if I wanted a mini-Mac Pro, something higher than the Mini but without the Mac Pro's power - I would still want it to resemble the Pro line - keeping the form factor, only shrunk. Think iPod to Nano. ;)

If Apple released a Media Centre I would want it in the form factor you mention - just not the for the Mac MidiPro. :p

Well, I think you're forgetting about a HUGE market of people that is growing rapidly each day. I am talking about the "Prosumer".

Most of our geeky, annoying PC bretheren are Prosumers, and I would venture than most MacRumours readers are as well.

I for instance am one. I have a regular 9-5, boring, but it pays the bills. In my spare time, I like to dabble in digital photography, and digital video. Both of these, especially the later, require something more than a Mini, but less than a MacPro. The iMac won't fit the bill, because I like having choice in monitors, and ability to have more internal drives for RAID.

I'm not putting out the next blockbuster in Hollywood, and my photowork won't be shown in a magazine near you, so I don't need a Mac Pro.

I've sold my G4 and G5 towers in the previous months leading up to WWDC because I was anticipating a lower-end machine (read: costs less) that would suit my purposes. Now it looks like I'll have to pick up a used dual G5 on eBay until Apple gets their head on straight, or go build myself a PC for $1200 (*the crowd gasps*)... Unfortunately for Apple, I've been forced to consider the "dark side" and have come to learn that Windows isn't all that bad.

The Mini is a desktop.

The iMac is the greatest desktop ever made.

The iMac is just an MBP. LOL.

The MBP is a great portable but the iMac has a fullsize (wireless) keyboard and mouse, the graphics card isn't throttled down, and it has a 20" screen. Best of all, no rat's nest of wires (unless you want) and it takes up almost no space. Oh, and it's beautiful.

Just get a Mac Pro if you want to add all sorts of stuff. Most people say they need that, but then seldom buy much. Anyway, the Mac Pro is a steal if you want an ubergeek machine to fiddle with. You couldn't do better.

Funny... I had also started a thread about this issue. Though mine addressed the "hole" in the product line naming scheme (Noting that the computer in question here, should really be called the "Mac". But there was plenty of discussion about that.)

I really wish this computer existed, and, as I'd suspect, so do many others.

But for those of us wanting to hook up a 23" ACD, and not side by side with the iMac, but as the only monitor, and those other people buying Dell 24" LCD's, the Mac Pro is still overkill. Sorry but I don't have $2500 for a computer, $1000 for a display and another gaggle of dough for expensive RAM, HDD upgrades & Wireless options.

Let's see: Quad 2.66 (like I need it), 2GB RAM (do need it), 500GB HDD, 23" ACD, Bluetooth, Airport, Wireless Keyboard & Mouse & Applecare = $4,386. Even if I drop down to Quad 2.0, which everyone knows is not worth the savings, we're still talking $4,086.

Apple needs to do something. They have extremes a gigantic 4 core monster or little Mini with a fake GPU. A gigantic hole that iMac cant fill with the millions of monitors outthere. All in ones are sweet but........the consumer wants choice. Consumer is King!:)

P.S.

If I configure an iMac, sames specs RAM, HDD, $60 for Keyboard & Mouse, Applecare, 23" ACD, and take off $200 to make the base machine $1499,
that's $3,227 as configured. That I can stomach more. Take off another $100 for a $1399 base machine and $3,127 out the door & I'm sold.

For most people the iMac is the perfect machine. For anyone else wanting a headless midi-mac the reasons for wanting it will be things like expandability - upgrading the video cards and storage etc, i.e. people with a fair amount of tech knowledge. For them the solution has already been given by Apple.

Mac Pro 2.0 Ghz $2199
One processor sold on eBay for $600

= Mac Midi 2.0Ghz Dual Core for $1599

Considering an iMac 20" goes for $1699 that sounds pretty reasonable.
