I was really bummed recently because I was unable to order the Macheist bundle. I put my entire order in and then got a "server overload, please wait" message that sat there for hours. I did not want to cancel out and recorder, because I didn't want my credit card charged twice.

Will Apple servers be more robust?!? I hope so! I don't want to be stuck in the same credit card limbo, especially on a $500+ order!!!!

I used paypal with machiest the other day and had no problem. I don't think there will be a billion users trying to send $500 to Apple all at the same time. Apple servers have already handled the sale of 10,000,000 songs and millions of iPhone app downloads. I think Apple knows a thing or two about scaling servers to meet demand. I doubt I will be pre-ordering. A certain uncle down in Washington wants me to send him a substantial amount of money by April 15. Maybe after that I will get my hands on an iPad. But I doubt server demand will be a factor for those who want to order or pre-order an iPad.

Hope you're right. My Macheist experience left a very bad taste in my mouth. All things considered, I'm happy: because of their lousy servers, and unwilliness to respond to any of my tweets or emails or the public postings in their forums, they didn't get my money.

Treat it as a teachable moment: don't wait until the last minute when you want to buy something. The Mac Heist servers were wide open until the clock turned to 50K. Reality is though that no Mac Heist has ever ended with all the apps not being unlocked. The one time the sales goal was not met the unlocked the locked app anyway.

So if you order sometime tomorrow -- don't have to be the first and I'm sure Apple's site will be dog slow for a few hours -- you should be fine. Apple always posts expected delivery date & you can also cancel anytime before shipping so no real risk of anything.

You know if they could handle the demand for iPhones, I suspect they'll be able to handle the iPad demand. I don't think the demand for the iPad is going to eclipse the demand for the iPhone when it make available.

And in the off chance the servers crash - so what. You wait until the servers are online and place your order then. Its not like the world will come to an end, or that apple will change its mind on the ipad and not let you pre-purchase the thing
