Will Apple start email service like Google did?

Gmail was an instant hit even when everyone was already using Hotmail, Yahoo and AOL mail for a long time. Wouldn't it be an instant hit if Apple starts email service?

And, of course, make it the default email client on every iPhone and iPod Touch? Millions of them worldwide.
 
Yeah! Something else for the dev team to jailbreak.

"I just jailbroke my iMail on 3.1.1.! I dont wanna upgrade to 3.1.2 cuz I'll lose my jailbreak! I need customization of icons, and Apple wont let me! I cant live without it!"

Wouldnt it be cool if Apple offered a Phone?

They could make it like a Ipod and a Phone all in one. They could put a big screen, I bet they would sell a bunch of them.

They could call it the IpodPhone.

Oh and maybe they will come out with an app store like Microsoft has...:p:p
 
Well, a more interesting question would be whether it would be a good move for Apple to make Apple mail free rather than a paid service. It could be another way to bring people into the Apple world.

On the other hand, MobileMe is so terrible it's hardly a good advertisement for Apple.

It actually was free of charge once upon a time (it was called iTools). It later became a paid service called .Mac, and more recently was rebranded MobileMe.

I've been using the service continuously since the iTools days. iTools was the best (because it was free). MobileMe is halfway decent —and leaps and bounds better than .Mac, which was absolutely terrible.

What is so bad about MobileMe? I've been using since getting my iPhone 3G in July 2008 and it's been working great.
 
mobile me isnt too bad

been using mobile me since 2007 when it was .mac

It had a few teething problems but apple are quick to fi it and they do offer compensation when things go wrong. its not bad at all. i think its def worth the money over an exchange set up.
 
I like the MobileMe service but the web interface is slow and lacking compared to Gmail.

As far as the original question goes, if Apple saw any incentive to do it they'd do it. Personally I can't think of one good reason to compete with the numerous other free services out there.

What would Apple Mail have that none of the rest have? When there's a good answer to that Apple will consider it.
 
I dont think apple would start an email service, but you never know :p

But i like Gmail and will stay on gmail.

If you haven't noticed... They sell things. Why would they offer a free email service if they want people to buy MobileMe.

Also, it'd be a pointless industry to get into. Google and Yahoo already dominate the email industry. Apple wouldn't try to do something unless they were trying to be the best. There is no way they are going to overtake Gmail and Yahoo at this point.
 
Why is everyone bagging on MobileMe? I have had it for more then a year now and it is great! Mail is sync'd between my iPhone and MBP, same with contacts and iCal.

I agree the web interface for mail isn't great, but that really isn't the key selling point now is it?

As for the OP's question, when GMail came out it was different from hotmail, yahoo, etc, glitzy AJAX interface, tons of storage, while not ground breaking stuff, it was different and unique. Unless Apple can provide something inovating in the free web mail space, which would attract people, I don't think they really want in on the web mail scene, but hey I could be wrong.

I had its precursor, .mac, in 2005-2006, and I thought it was *horrible*. Very, very slow. I stopped using it after that, so I don't know whether MobileMe is any better. .mac sort of ruined it for me.

true but something I feel apple should do is offer a free email address to iPhone users like blackberry does for its customers. But of course Apple will not do that because they can get people to pay for a crap like mobileme that does not even make it to par with free services.

Something that amazes me is how quickly Google took over in the free email world and how game changing Google was. Before google max inbox size for the free customers was 10 megs and even paid customers for things like yahoo was only 25 megs. Google comes in and very quickly you see everyone else jump.

GMail last time I bother looking on mine had crossed 4 gigs and still growing.

I think the biggest thing that made Google so successful was definitely the inbox size, but a huge thing is the minimal ads!

Have you used Yahoo lately? It's absurd and they even just got rid of a bunch!

Many people, prior to gmail, had been using Emails associated with their service providers. Now that people switch these around so much it seemed pointless. Yahoo always offered free email service, but as you said, it was limited to small sizes for the inbox. Yahoo (along with SBC/Ameritech/AT&T) offers internet service and premium accounts, but you lose these accounts entirely when your service is over!!!

Gmail is now up to 7.4 gigs of mailspace. I believe that they offer this on the assumption that users will almost never go over 1gb or if they do (Many years down the road) they will be able to support it and then some!

It was a great tactic to draw customers who were tired of limits and expiration on email accounts and just wanted something they could access anywhere easily.

Something would have to be very innovative to take the market and get people to switch now. With text, voice and video chat integration in Gmail along with all the other google services that come with it... I really don't think Apple could even come close to competing.
 
I guess most of the people slagging of MobileMe don't use it or had .mac which was not great. I like MobileMe and have no problems with it.

I do think Apple should make MobileMe free on iPhones, iPod touches and Macs for the first six months. I realise there's a free 60 day trial but how many new users know about that?

Every single person who gets their phone from the Apple Store. They really tried to push that on me.
