They really never do that. However, they will sell refurbished ones for some time to come. :) But even the refurb and used market Mac prices very rarely plummet after a new release. They'll go down slightly, particularly on the last model or two before the new Aluminum iMac. That's about it. Typically that's true both for Apple direct and for resellers, forums, eBay, etc.

I was at the apple store today and they told me they were selling what remained of their old ones at a discounted price. I didn;t pay attention to the price though because I was there for the new one :)

I am sure, what ever stock they have , will be shipped here to Mexico, when the iMac went to core 2 duo, last October, the Apple retailers didnt get them until March, and I was there last weekend, and the 15" MacBook Pro, was still the core duo version

They were selling them last night..

I went to the Apple Store hoping to look at the new iMac before purchasing. They didn't have any on display - only the white ones. They did have the new ones in stock. I asked if there was a discount on the old ones (I was looking at the 24 inch), yes, $300 off. With educational discount there was only $100 difference between the old and the new, so I bought the new one ;)

I bet they put the displays on sale cheaper, though.

CompUSA usually has a good inventory of Macs and when they update the old ones are sold as new for a week or two (until they get new ones in) then they'll drop the old ones by $100-150 or so. Then the less desirable models (17" iMacs, models that have a cheap next step up, etc) will go on clearance for $200-300 or so off a couple months later. That's what I've noticed anyways.

Apple just isn't in the dumping market, sadly.... :( Even in the used market, there's a strong slowing of depreciation. Like if a Macbook that's a year old sells used for $750-850, an iBook G4 that's 3-4 years old will still sell used for $400-500... it's very different from a lot of the used PC market. There *is* a sweet spot, where you can get things that are 1-1.5 years out of date at a pretty good discount, but after that, it really slows dramatically.

I went to Apple Store Victoria Gardens on Tuesday to get the new iMac. When I asked for the the new 24" 2.4 model the salesman led me to the older 24" iMac and tried to sell it to me for $200 dollars more than the new one! I told him I wanted the new ones and he seemed to be playing dumb and said "We have new ones?" Long story short he went and checked in the back and got me one.

Now it is the case sometimes Apple employees do not really know some of the new products coming in but I do not think this was the case.

THe point to the story is that some Apple stores still are selling the older iMac's to get rid of old stock. So there is a chance you can get one, with a student discount if it applies, and maybe you can get them to drop the price. But i would find that doubtful.

I've been to the apple store both tuesday and wednesday now, and I did find it very strange that the new iMacs were no where to be seen. Most of the employees hadn't even seen one out of the box. It looked as though they were just going to keep selling the old iMacs until they ran out, and only sell the new ones to those who asked. :\

I got a refurbished white imac 2.0 cd2 at the online apple store for $830. I waited as soon as the apple store went back up and cashed in. There weren't too many on ebay either the ones that were there the starting bid was around $650.

Fry's had the old white imac 24" for $1999 with $100 discount.. as opposed to the better in every department new imac 24" for $1799... hoping the non-apple addict consumers hadn't heard the news?

That was the way things were here in Denver. I had to check a couple stores before I found one that had them on display. The store that had them on display said it just took a little while to unpack them, load whatever software they needed, and also load all of the Apple tutorials and such on that you find on the display models. But who really knows if that's the complete truth. Regardless, I finally got to play with the new ones. I love 'em!
