forgive me for being thick, but how is it that it would work? wouldn't you need to have the latest version of software? if i am not being too much of a pest, could you explain?

the sdk will run on a mac, probably with xcode running

Well of course, you have to wait until that firmware is unlocked, so that could take a bit, but after you unlock the phone, it is running that firmware, with usually no differences from people with stock or just jailbroken phones...
