I love my iPhone X, but damn I hate when apps are not updated for its screen, even now 1 year after launch. I get that the addition of a notch is more work for a developer than just a new screen size, but it still makes me worried about getting the 6.5” at launch.

How was it when iPhone 6 and 6 Plus was first released? Were the apps ugly and pixelated in the beginning?

Or are most apps/games coded in a “resolution independent” way nowadays?

Optimizing 6.5" would probably be a similar process as optimizing for iPhone ex. So, we could wait another year for developers that care about ex line to optimize their apps. Not sure if Apple steps in and force the optimization.

It's a good point. I got my X 5 months after release, which wasn't by choice, but one of the good things about getting it so late was that many Apps had been optimised for the new screen design.

It's probably a good idea to hold off a few months from the hardware release of a new form factor because it's wasted if software still looks like its for a smaller sized screen.

Or at least keep tabs on your most used Apps, & when they're updated, then jump on the new phone...by then, stock will have settled & you'll have had the chance to watch reviews not only of the phone, but of accessories like screen protectors/cases etc...that may also interest you.

No doubt it will take the app people months to optimize to the larger screen. Some apps will never be updated.

Might as well accept it.

I think this year developers are ready for the notch and the iPhone X plus.

Shouldn’t be a problem

I usually purchased new iPhones at launch every year. I have to say, with iPhone X it felt like apps were more quickly updated to be optimized for that display compared to when the 6 and 6 Plus launched with new screen resolutions.

Also, with the X, it had the same point width as the 6/7/8, so apps that were not optimized for the X screen still displayed well without being pixelated or blurry, just they had black bars on the top and bottom.

I’ve had a Plus for two years and there’s still one or two apps (shopping, banking etc) that are not optimised. But all the big hitter apps should be quite quick off the mark.
