Right now I'm under an AT&T family plan (voice only). I'm thinking of buying a used iphone 3G from ebay, and use my current sim card. Here are my questions:

1) Will AT&T find out I'm using an iphone and force me to add data plan? I don't need one since I have access to wifi everywhere on campus.

2) Do I need to activate & jailbreak & unlock the iphone before using it?

Thanks a lot for your help!

1. Yes, they are in their right.

2. Depends. If it's used, then it's already activated and all you need is to jailbreak it if you want jailbreak goodies or if you like to be with T-Mobile, then you can unlock it.

Thanks a lot for the quick reply!!!

I was just wondering if it has ever happened to anyone... If yes, I guess I'll just switch to other phone campany then...

Once jailbroken, it is possible to block usage of AT&T data plan. This is to ensure you can stay on the current family voice only plan without paying for data. Even though you have wifi, using an iPhone w/o data plan falls short of experiencing the device to its fullest.
