will blu ray play back under parallels or fusion with cyberlink software?

Every likes to criticize vista for drm but at least you can play blu ray and hdDvd. Really sucks that apple cant do this.

It will not work. Playback software (WinDVD or PowerDVD) for HD DVD or Blu-ray mandate specific graphics drivers (from AMD/ATI, nVidia or Intel) probably as a way of complying with AACS and the graphics drivers in Parallels or VMware Fusion are not compatible.

I tested it on both Parallels and VMWare... both will not work. Yes it really sucks that there is no bluray or hddvd playback software on the mac.

Lets hope they update Leopard DVD Player soon. I have a RAID card and can't even load bootcamp to watch HDDVD/Bluray content.

Leopard's DVD player was supposed to have high-def disc playback and now it doesn't.

Also, they are part of the Blu-ray consortium, yet have nothing available, not to mention the HD DVD drive for the XBox 360 is also compatible with it.

Maybe something for Jan. 15?

I appreciate people wanting to use Power DVD Ultra in Windows running inside of Fusion or Parallels. The catch is - Power DVD Ultra looks at the video driver and usually, if you try it you'll get an error referencing something about the video and then Power DVD fails out.

Both Parallels and Fusion (last I recall from months ago) have their own video emulation/driver etc and Power DVD wont recognize it. Both Parallels and Fusion would have to work with Power DVD to make changes if in the future this option was to be available - playback of Blu Ray Medium.

All is not lost. If you want playback of blu ray files (M2TS), and can live with just the main movie files - Give Plex on OSX a try. It does a very good job on faster intel based systems. It is CPU intensive and not GPU intensive (meaning all the work really is done by the CPU(s) and very little is involved with the Video other than requiring the presence of GL).

My Chagrin - I have several DVDs and Blu Ray movies that I was archiving onto storage drives. DVDs were converted to one large "main feature" VOB and similar for Blu Ray being just the main movie m2ts file (or merged multiple files into one large file). These files play very well from my storage device to Plex on my 2 Macs and also UPnP protocol to PS3 attached to my plasma television. While all sounds great, the particular blu ray burner is skiddish on what it will read. I have used for several months AnyDVD HD to copy my DVDs and Blu Rays to the hard drive. Here is the hierarchy -

Mac OSX Leopard =>VMWare Fusion=>XPpro=>AnyDVD HD

When I say the blu ray is skiddish, at times it fails to mount a disc in MAC and fails as well in the XP/AnyDVD combo as well.

I have meanwhile sent back the drive after having it for a fair amount of time but still under 1 year warrantee to the vendor. Sadly, they say the find nothing wrong and want to return it to me. I have tried out some blu ray "readers" (not writers) and with limited success (they wont work in Fusion but mount in OSX. - Frustrating. My next step is to see what OWC has to offer and if they are a bit better, I'll be glad to mention the less than reasonable vendor who sold me the blu ray writer later. Worst case, and probably what I should have done all along - use Bootcamp with the cheaper Blu Ray Readers and as well, at least some older version of PowerDVD Ultra does work in bootcamp as the vid drivers are recognized.

So - Plex to read Blu Ray m2ts files and other AND it is possible to simply use Blu Ray Burners for the most part in VMWare to archive the media to hard drive. PowerDVD Ultra will NOT work in either virtual systems listed due to at least the video driver situation and perhaps other items.
