I've been having intermittent wifi issues with my iPad and its really starting to bug the crap out of me now.

Will switching to an apple router end my misery?

I've tried all the recommended fixes with no luck and it seems to be getting worse by the day.

***EDIT - I was mistaken..i'm using Motorla VT2542 with vonage NOT the linksys wrt54g.

I cannot find any firmware updates for this model..any help?
Thanks

I have an Airport Extreme and have never had an issue with my W-Fi.
Of course, it may be your broadband provider...do you have Verizon?

I can't guarantee you, but my wife and I both have ipads and an airport extreme and have not really had any problems. At least not any more than a typical laptop where it may lose the network once a week or so and you just have to reselect it. If people weren't complaining I would not have known that there were any issues.

I live in South Beach. Provider is Atlantic broadband but I don't think that has anything to do with it. I have 5 other computers/devices all running perfectly fine from my linksys router.

Maybe I should swap out for a new iPad?

It fixed my problem. I got a replacement iPad and extreme at the same time but I haven't had any problems with the new iPad and the router is pretty bad a**!

linksys is notorious for releasing tons of firmware updates to correct problems.

are you on their latest firmware?

For reference my router is a linksys WRT54G with vonage

Ugh I used to have so much problems with that router. Signal dropouts, weird glitches and crappy reception, lost ALL wifi connectivity at times just turning the microwave on. I even tried one of the N series routers and was unhappy with it.

Got an apple extreme router and I love it, rock solid, great security, and works with my microwave lol. Reception is so good I can use it inside my metal shed in my backyard with the doors closed.

I use a Linksys router and have had no problems. What are the advantages of the Airport Extreme?

The WRT54G is a pretty old model. I just replace mine, had it 6 years, no reason, just wanted a N model. Before you plunk down a chunk on change on a routher that will nearly be 200 dollars with tax, try your iPad at another location, a friends house, work (if you have wifi at your office) or a free wifi spot and see if you experience the same issue. You need to see if it the iPad, or the router.

If you have the screw off antennae, you can try using the 7 inch antennae. Once I did that I never had a drop out issue.

I have an old Belkin g router. Have used a CTR500 from Cradlepoint (with wpa/wpa2 for security) and other routers when out and about that I have no clue what they were. No problems with it.

What security are you using on your router? WEP, WPA, WPA2 ?

I believe they suggest WPA or WPA2 with newer devices like the iPad. I would look into that first. If it doesn't work maybe get an appointment at the apple store to make sure there isn't a different issue your are having.

I'm currently using WPA security. I've tried connecting on my neighbors open wifi and have had the same problems. I think ill make an appointment at the genius bar and see what's up.

I know my router is old but since I'm on vonage I think my choices are limited.

I have a linksys router and it works fine. If your other devices are working fine with your current router than the problem most likely lies with the iPad. I would do as another poster said and check it with different routers before buying a new one

Is anyone successfully using the WRT54g with an iPad and having no issues?

Yes it will. I was dropping connection constantly with my previous router (Verizon) and since I've bought the Airport Extreme I haven't dropped connection once. Very happy with it and it is fast as hell!

Using iPad with wrt54g with DD-WRT firmware without any problems. I recommend ddwrt, I had a lot of problems originally with linksys firmware, they all gone since i flashed ddwrt firmware about a year ago.

Yea... I have an old WRT54g and a 16gb iPad and I haven't had connection issues at my house at all. At my buddy's house with a Verizon wifi unit I have had lots of connection problems.

did you assign the ipad's MAC address a static private IP on the router (or wahtever handles DHCP)?

I have an airport extreme but it's just a switch and a wireless AP, our ATT Uverse gateway handles DHCP. A friend brought over an ipad and it would connect to the airport extreme, I could see it in the stats, but it was not getting an IP address.

I went into the ATT Uverse gateway config, assigned it's MAC address a static IP, he turned wifi off and back on and it immediately connected.

It's a DHCP bug with the ipad. don't waste money on an unnecessary upgrade if you don't need to.

ANd don't bother with dd-wrt if you don't know what you're doing.
