Tim's given us his justifications for the mini's starting price, and whether or not you agree with his justification you have too admit Apple has handed Google an excellent marketing opportunity. The question is will Google capitalize on this. I don't believe I've ever seen an add for the Nexus 7 but it seems like now would be an excellent time for Google to aggressively push the Nexus 7.

Maybe emphasize how they saved money by making theirs out of plastic? Or they can compare native apps? Honestly, I don't think they want to come off looking so pathetic, the way Amazon did. They've got a product that is fine, for what it is. And is selling decently, last I heard.

Probably but they make no money on the N7 so spending on a huge advertising campaign just puts them further in the hole.

I thought companies had learned from the dot.com bust. You have to make money somewhere

When nothing else is working, they have to try something. Selling at cost is that something.

Saying that you saved money during production sounds bad to consumers. They'd rather hear that you're taking less of a profit to provide them with higher quality.

Whenever I hear a company boasting that they saved money I think how their product must suck.

Google is rumored to be releasing the Nexus 10 on Monday. The leaked specs put the iPad 4 to shame (faster, much higher resolution, slightly thinner and lighter). I'm curious to see what the price will be. Of course Apple won't let Best Buy sell them.

A link would have been nice.

http://www.examiner.com/article/google-svp-vic-gundotra-outs-the-unannounced-nexus-10-tablet

The Nexus 10 reportedly sports a dual-core 1.7GHz Samsung Exynos 5250, a Mali-T604 GPU, 2GB of RAM, 16GB of internal storage (but without a microSD slot), a somewhat disappointing 5MP rear-facing camera, nd a Super AMOLED display with 2,560 x 1,600 resolution.

How is this putting the iPad 4 to shame? VFC you are behaving more and more like a Troll. These specs aren't going to put fear in any iPad 4 owner.

Nothing wrong with making a tablet out of plastic (probably carbon fiber); especially considering the ever shortening life spans of electronic gadgets.

BTW - Boeing stopped building planes out of aluminum and moved to carbon fiber plastic.

Google doesn't need to capitalize on the Mini's price. Consumers will weigh $249 vs $329 and make their decision. I own iPad's but I went with the Nexus 7, solid deal at $249. :)

Paying for What you Want

It's not always what you pay but what you get (for your money) that matters most to me. I saw competing Tablets at the stores today and I wouldn't have any of them, even if they were selling for $50.
I have pre ordered an iPad Mini and paying, exactly, for what I want :D

I think what has happened with the Nexus 7 is that Google released a product that strikes a great balance of affordability, good-to-great specs, and good software. People are buying and will continue to buy it, especially with the new price/storage size shuffle.

It's a winning product and, in the bigger picture, really helped put the Nexus brand and name out there (more than any Nexus phone ever did).

Now, we're going to see a full line up from them:

Nexus 4
Nexus 7
Nexus 10

It's really coming into its own.

Yea, I'm so sick of the plastic argument. As long as the build quality is good, that's what really matters.

If the Nexus 7 is getting updated to 32GB at the same price of $249, that's a huge blow to the iPad Mini. Can't believe people would spend more for less specs. Why get 16GB for more money when you could save $80 and get the same or soon better specs. If you're already invetested in the eco system yea I suppose, but that sucks that you're sorta stuck if you want a pure Apple experience.

Seems there is a little delay for the nexus 10.

If Google are serious about taking on Apple they really must up the storage capability of their devices, particularly given the fact they have dropped the microSD card option.

FWIW, I think the Nexus 7 is a great little device and like the idea of the rubberised back - it looks good and is not prone to scratching. Indeed, every one who buys a iPad or iPad mini is forced to purchase skins/covers if they wish to protect the brushed aluminium or paint surface from scratching - i.e., they have paid an arm and a leg for a mobile device and fear scratching it - this issue does not occur with the N7 based on price and material used for construction - obviously screen protectors are a must in my opinion.

Back to storage, it would be a no-brainer to purchase the N7 if it came with 64G storage - why buy a iTouch or iPad mini when you can have both a reasonable amount of storage - this being 64G in my mind - and a reasonably small form factor to take out and about - whilst I like the iTouch, its screen really is a little small and again cost is an issue.

In a nutshell, if Google offered a N7 with 64G storage and G3 connectivity I'd go out and purchase one over a iTouch and iPad.

One thing is for sure, whilst I'm a iPad 3 owner, one's annoyed that after only 4 months of ownership Apple upped the spec's in a move to take the wind out of the sails of both Google and MicroSoft - this means we have 100 million iPad devices that are now subpar, the iPad Mini is seriously flawed - we know it will be updated shortly to Retina and a A5X processor - and again the iTouch is now just too expensive - same price point and storage capability since the first one appeared in late 2007.

In a nutshell, Google have had a door opened for them by Apple's relentless thrust for extracting every dime it can from its existing user base - I've had enough of this and will be moving to android for my mobility needs be it a N7 or Asus Transformer series.
