Will I have a chance to get one at 4pm?

You won't know for sure until you line up and wait. Just pick your store and have a couple backup stores in the area, just in case. If you can't get one tonight, make use of the iPhone availability checker at the Apple Store and try to track one down over the next couple of weeks.
Don't worry too much about it this afternoon...otherwise you will look like a total spaz in your senior pics.

Exactly how i feel. I refuse to get exited until i have the box in my hands. I would die if i told myself i was getting one and i didnt.
I was thinking the exact same thing because I'm going at 4 also. I worry now, looking at the lines. We'll see...
I'm going to get in line around 4 at the AT&T store near my apartment if it's not crazy b/c it's in Times Square. If it's crazy, I'll head to a nearby one that's kinda in a business district/ritzy area and never as crowded (from my experience) as the times Square location. Around the block there's another AT&T store also.
BUT, the downside is that all of those may have long lines, so heading to another place may not do any good. Also, people can buy 2, so 2x ___ = oh no?
By 6pm, if the line's not moving fast and I feel hopeless, I'll order online.

EDITED to say, after reading more threads and seeing the deliveries, I think those of us who go at 4:00 MAY have a chance.

ha im not to worried, I want to get it before next tuesday though because im driving my mom to the hospital and I will be there off and on the days following.
Yeah it has gotten the better of me. I am going to my local Apple Store now to get in line. I was going to wait, but I would be disappointed if I didn't get one today, and I can pretty much assure myself of one if I go now.
Lucky you. My visitors are heading over from the airport now and I'm sooo annoyed. WHY did they choose iDay of all days???

There's a part of me that thinks I should go at around 9pm tonight. That way all of the in-liners will have gotten theirs, and it should be relatively easy to go in once the first wave rushes home to play with their new toy.
Another part, however, is screaming "get in line now, get in line now!"
Odds are I'll go a little before 6pm; if I have to wait a few days or a week, it'll suck, but I can deal. Waiting might be okay if it will let me see the first-wave's comments about service, features and the unknown bugs.
But the anticipation is getting kinda annoying...

They'll sell it online too, so if by some miraculous way they sell out in louisiana, i'll have 2 hours to get home before they go on sale online.
Where in Cali are you? I know of a corporate AT&T store (that I was going to go to) that is only 2 weeks old and doesn't even show up on their map locator, but will definitely have iPhones. Can't imagine too many people waiting there considering not too many know about it.
I never would imagine that I might even think of waiting in line for anything but you sort of get sucked up into this madness. I have a list of 8 nearby At&ts that will have the iphone and will circle around a see what it looks like. There goes another 60 bucks for gas. If lines are bad, it's back home to the computer, order online and wait.
We waited 6 mos, what's a few more days?

I'm sure it's different everywhere, but here in downtown boston, as of 12:15 or 12:30, the two AT&T stores near me had a combined 4 people waiting outside. So I think I have a decent shot, even getting off work at 5.
IMO apple is way, way more prepared for the demand than most on this board have been giving them credit for. I think nearly everyone who wants one will get one, and the ebayers will get what they deserve. But we'll see in 4.5 hours, won't we?

I called a few stores in the NC area in 1 has no line and the other has 2 people. This was around 1pm eastern. I am heading over around 3pm and hopefully I can go drink (if there is still no line)
