***back to the days when ios9 kindled many ipad 1st gen mini's*** i have this fear of updating stricken to my core. I have a 1st Gen Ipad air (Earliest firmware release iOS 7.0.3 (11B511) on 10/16/2013) and just as my ipsw of 11.2.6 downloaded, i thought, i better take a quick look for some humdrum.. and i found some... so gang, i have an ipad air on 8.4, but i've fallen in love w/ ios 11.. but is it too risky? will it be shelved away to the point where I would even feel guilty to sell it? looking for some feedback, on if your ipad air 1 still performs without the naglag on ios 11. thanks a lot.

What do you mean by 'kindle your iPad'? If you mean the Kindle app, you can definitely use it on iOS 11?

I jokingly meant that it would only be useful as a kindle after upgrading. Not everyone gets my sense of humor ;)

The best advice I can give you is to watch Youtube videos to see how the Air runs on iOS 11.3

I have an original Air which I purchased in 2014 and it was running iOS 7 up until last year. I had purchased the 2017 iPad as a comparison just in case iOS 11 turned my iPar Air into molasses. I discovered that the performance between the Air and 2017 iPad on iOS 11 was too close to call so I returned the 2017 iPad.

The only time I see stutters is in the App store app and I rarely if ever use that. I even have Reduced Motion turned off and everything is really smooth.

Of course YMMV but i’m glad I made the jump. I feel I have gained another extra 2-3 years of use.

Note, this is definitely a YMMV situation. Personally, I think there's a very noticeable difference between Air (A7) and 2017 iPad (A9).

That said, while there's definitely lag, Air (A7) on iOS 11 performs much better than iPad 2 or mini (A5) on iOS 9 did.

well, i just got an error 14 updating my ipad so it's currently bricked atm, next step updating itunes and maybe my osx :( i erased all the data on 8.4 and tried to set up and it konked out at that stage too. itunes recognized it so i tried the restore w/ 11.2.6 ... man this sucks. i did not want to have to update anything else and I forgot to take any precautions that I had cydia on there.... I just lost an iphone 5s on ios 7.1.2 like a month ago too. whyyyyy is thiss happpeniinngggggg.... so im updating itunes now, yay that I don't have to update the osx to get it or it probably would have destroyed my computer too. currently sitting with the sync to itunes screen in limbo...

If it was Jailbroken then yes you have no choice but to do a restore from iTunes. You should be fine so I wouldn't worry too much. Apple doesn't purposely brick iDevices that are Jailbroken and that want to run legit iOS.

Once you're running iOS 11 let us know your impressions.

That maybe true but in real world performance the gain I saw between my original iPad Air and the 2017 iPad were too close to call and not worth $329.

Lol, I am talking about real world usage. :p

For me, lag and stutters on the Air are noticeable enough to be annoying. It's also noticeably slower at rendering webpages, launching apps, etc. Plus, very frequent app and Safari tab reloads due to the 1GB RAM.

Oh well, at least A7+iOS11 isn't quite throw-against-the-wall level frustrating like A5+iOS 8/9 were.

I'm not seeing any of that on my Air. It's only when I go to the App store that I see stuttering but I also had stuttering in the App store in iOS 7. Besides that webpages load quickly even with JavaScript turned on.

Just coming back to say after a few sketchy error's the upgrade did complete.... originally i downloaded the ipsw for 11.2.6 which apple is still signing, but ultimately i had to update itunes and download 11.3 for it to work. So far so good, not noticing a ton of lag and loving the new features. Thanks all for your comments and encouragement.
