Will I loose everything if I install El Capitan GM over Yosemite?

I currently have Yosemite installed on my iMac - If I install the El Capitan GM will I loose all my installed programs and configuration or will it just do an upgrade?

It will simply do an upgrade unless you intentionally wipe the drive first and then install.

You should be fine, but keep in mind, that is possible that apps may "break" in an OS update. If you update correctly, it is unlikely that you would lose any documents or data.

One exception might be iPhoto, as it was replaced with Photos. You might lose that.

Which email provider are you using and if it is iCloud, do you have iCloud services turned on?

You'll have to re-import your mailboxes. They're still right there in ~/Library/Mail. Also, you'll lose any changes you might have made to your private/etc/hosts file. (That doesn't affect a lot of folks, of course, but, if you've modded it, at all, better have a backup). Accounts will be missing in Mail, also. You'll also lose VPN access through any of the major VPN clients. You can set up a VPN tunnel to a known server, with authentication, in the usual Sys Prefs/Network, but you'll not have any extra features that are normal in most decent VPN clients, namely: high end encryption, KILL on disconnect, access to server-specific Port Forwarding, etc. There's more, no doubt. On the bright side, many parts of the OS are running smoother and quicker. [EDIT: Two of my VPN clients work (99%) in Chrome, but not at all when using Firefox or Safari, strange...]

I've heard from other users of the that they still have iPhoto and it still works. It's also available to download in the Purchased tab of the App Store. I've moved on to photos myself. It did take me a while to convert, but it really is so much faster. For some reason in Yosemite it locks up my trash. If I try to empty trash with Photos open it just locks up and won't empty until I close Photos app. On El Capitan, it works just fine.

A clean install, of course iPhoto will be gone. It was never apart of the preloaded apps before. Yet Photos is now.

But yeah because apps could break, once the final release is out, I will be installing on another partition, just as I did for the PB. I'll transition over with the working apps. And once Yosemite is not needed anymore I'll ditch it.

Nope, you won't lose a thing. Make sure you do a Time Machine backup FIRST. (The installer will even tell you to do this).

You can still run iPhoto by Showing Package Contents > Contents > MacOS > iPhoto (Terminal).
