Hello. I just got a new iMac and an external hard drive exclusively for TM back up. I have two questions..

1.) If I plug my old external hard drive, that was partitioned for photos and a TM back up that I had been using on my Mac mini before I got this new iMac, into my new iMac that now has a new external hd for a TM back up, what will happen? Will the new iMac notice the old TM back up and do something weird?

2.) If I eject my new external hard drive with the new TM back ups on my iMac and then plug it back in, does the iMac automatically recognize it’s a Tm back up and just start working again or is there a process when you plug back in?

Thanks.

1) No. I think as long as the current drive is available, it probably won't notice it. It might 'bless' the drive with the icon, but it won't wipe it. (You can also drag and drop things off the old TM backup to the new mac drive, skipping trying to get the new TM to use the old backup files)

2) It recognizes the drive as a TM target. It will use it if it's the same name. If it's 'blessed' by that system, it should just carry on as normal.
