I have a 2008 mac pro and wanted to order an intel 120GB 320 series SSD. I noticed it has what looks to be a 3.5" adapter in the picture. Does anyone know if I can use this or do I need to shell out $20 for an icy dock?

Can't tell much from the picture, but it seems it won't fit, comparing it with the 2008 sled.

EDIT: also, remember the connectors in the back have to align/fit too...

Icy dock is one way to go, but I like better OWC's multimount options, if you have the 2nd optical bay free. Too bad OWC's MountPro doesn't work on 2008 MPs.

cheers!

It won't fit in the mac pro drive bays with the supplied adaptor.

You can mount it in the sled, however it sits central in the sled, not offset as a normal hard drive would. In the end I managed to fit mine in the optical bay.

That is odd, since the 2009 mac pro is virtually identical to the 2010.. for instance. I have the 2010 backplane board and processor board in place of the 2009 parts. I am still using my 2009 case along with its fans and internals - could explain why I haven't suffered excessive noise like others are. I am sure the 200 dollar apple ssd adapter will fit.. they didn't mod the case at all.

No one is talking about the Apple supplied adapter! OP is asking if the Intel supplied adapter fits and the answer is no.
