Please read this entire post, it's more than what I put in the title thread.

Most people here know I am not a fan of iOS, compared to Stock Android on the Pixel / Nexus phones or OnePlus Oxygen OS. But I used to own iPhone's and really would like to come back to a nice iPhone. I admit Apple makes the best hardware, and designs gorgeous beautiful smartphones. But to me only good iOS is a Jailbreak iOS, it allows for must needed tweaks, and I don't mean customization and making the phone look cool, I'm talking deep system changes that the OS desperately needs to be baked into stock iOS.

We all read the recent reports lately of iPhone sales slumping, and Apple stocks diving, etc...

Personally I think that's mainly because of smartphone saturation #1, and high prices #2.

#1: Smartphone saturation: Everyone has a smartphone today, most have an iPhone or Galaxy phone. And Joe Blow non tech guy isn't looking to upgrade his or her phone annually, the average consumer is more or less on a 2 year or 3 year upgrade cycle nowadays.

#2: Smartphone skyrocketing prices: Smartphone prices have gotten outrageous since 2017. Hitting that $1,000+ range now, is just ridiculous. When the Note 9 and iPhone XS Max, are $1,200+ is insane.

I deal with a very high end very successful crowd, and I am shocked to see these people using iPhone 6S's still, or Galaxy S7 Edge's still. These people could buy a $1,500 smartphone from the change that fell in between their Bentley seat cushions. But they don't care, they all say, hey my smartphone works, it's not cracked or broken, so they're in no hurry to change or switch to a newer phone.

And I think most normal consumers are now in a similar boat for a different reason. Price. When a new smartphone is $1,000+, most average folks will keep their phones longer, and try to keep better care of them, and not damage them. And this is really happening, and lately I see people still happy with a 3 year old iPhone or Galaxy phone.

Personally for me, i find iOS stale and boring, and actually ugly and outdated, and EXTREMELY LIMITING AND HANDCUFFED . The design of "Looks like you left the app drawer open" of a screen full of static icons, is really silly sad today in 2019. ZERO customization options. Zero options to set default apps to your liking. Apps that still behave and look like they did a decade ago, hello Phone app LOL wow it sucks, the Phone apps works like it did from 11 years ago, which is terrible. iOS needs a big overhaul, and they can look to the top 20 JB tweaks as a start.

If what they said was true last year about holding back features for IOS 13

Think iPad should get good improvements

Personally I don’t think their less than expected sales has anything to do with the software and its features, or lack of!

I’ve spoken to a number of people at work with older iPhones that have clearly stated they’re not paying a grand for a phone.

It’s all about price, certainly here in the UK.

Clearly the reason smartphone sales are down, is due to most people having a good smartphone already, and unless it's cracked broken, or battery problems, most people don't care to upgrade.

And then when they see these new phones costing an outrageous $1,000+, they absolutely rethink getting a new phone, and hold their current phone longer.

I couldn't be happier to see Apple sales down, and same with Samsung, I am glad people are waking up and saying F you to these insane prices.

Really why have smartphone prices skyrocketed other than greed ? Parts didn't all of a sudden go up 50% the last two years, yes part did get a little more expensive, but not that much, when you read the Bills of materials costs over the years. Actually tech should become more affordable the more it's mass produced and on big manufacturing processes.

Year to year the annual hardware upgrade shouldn't cost more production prices. Hardware gets faster year after year, but not prices.

It is because Apple, Samsung, etc...realize the sales numbers are going down, so for them to make the same profits, they increase the sell price of the phone, to make up the difference.

Will Apple implement most of what I jailbreak for in iOS 13? Hell, would they even allow just a handful of some of the tweaks I use most?

If not, the answer is no. I won't be buying a new iPhone. Especially true since I hear rumors that the physical design of the iPhone won't change either.

And no, semi-untethered jailbreaks are not good enough for me to cause me to move up. Major reason I stay on 9.0.2.

iOS 13 isn't going to make people more willing to pay $1,000 for a smartphone.

It's not the software, it's the pricing. Consumers are asking what $1,000 gives them that their current phone can't do.

Rumors are that iOS 13 is supposed to be the big OS overhaul. It was originally slated to come in iOS 12, but Apple held back due to iOS 11 being the worst smartphone OS ever created, so iOS 12 was just a polished perfected version of recent iOS's.

So now the big update to iOS is coming this Summer.

Great apps. used to wow us, and drive a great iOS experience. But this is not enough these days as competition is great. I'm not a developer, but is the current version iOS holding back developers?

I know device "security" is always important, and a simplistic GUI has been foundational to iOS. I feel that iOS looks and feels aged compared to the Mac OS. This is not an "apples vs. oranges" kind of comparison. No pun intended, but laugh if you wish ;)

I also used to think that screen size was the key to a better iOS experience, but that really hasn't been the case with my 8+, Xs or even more telling my iPad 2018 12.9". I'm just an end user, but as the OT points out people don't feel the need to upgrade their iPhones. Increasing iPhone prices are a factor to be sure. I think another part of the reason is that the iOS has been so slow to evolve. Has Apple's iOS brought KISS too far, for too long?

Will poor weak sales of smartphones from Apple and Samsung make them reevaluate their pricing? Bring them back down to reality.

Would love to see the iPhone 12 Max start at like $899, and the Galaxy Note 10 start at like $799. That's where they should be. And if they were, they'll sell in record numbers. But if they both think they can keep increasing the price, inching towards $1,500, then watch them stagnate and stall.

OK. Callbar? f.lux? Messages? MessagesCustomiser Pro? Eclipse? FolderEnhancer? Springtomize? Copic? TetherMe? Anchor? CalSwitch9? Alkaline? 20 Second Lockscreen? Etc, etc, etc?

Somehow I just don't see it.

Why would anyone buy a new iphone just for the iOS? It will be just as <whatever> on your current iphone, right?

The reason iPhone sales are down, is outrageous pricing #1.

And #2 people already happy and satisfied with their current iPhone 6S or iPhone 7/8, that has iOS 12.1 just like a brand new iPhone XS Max does, but doesn't cost them $1,200+.

899 for a Max in 2019 ain't happening .if anything they'd roll it back like 50 bucks or something and oat themselves on the back for offering such a steep discount compared to last year .

iOS 6 is what made me go with the iPhone 5 and not an Android back in 2012. iOS has always looked more polished than Android.

Until recently that is.
Yeah, I misread the question. I thought it meant what would make you buy a new iphone when you have one, not if you have a different brand.

And then this crazy new thing carriers are doing, offering 36 month financing on the new iPhone's. So your monthly bill stays the same, doesn't go up. But now your on a 3 year plan instead.

Because smartphones have gotten so insanely overpriced now, the only way carriers can keep people hooked is to fool them into the same payment as before, but probably not realizing they just got on a 3 year payment plan.

I agree with your points about market saturation and high prices being factors, and I don't see how iOS 13 will address either of those facts. I also know lots of people who can afford new phones but are still using iPhone 6 series devices. Why? Because they still work, and an iPhone Xs won't do anything for them that their current phone doesn't. Nothing they care about, anyway. Most people don't get excited about new tech just for the sake of new tech like most of us do. They look at it and say, "What does this do that my current one doesn't?" And when the answer is, "nothing really, it just does it a bit faster and looks a bit fancier." even people with the money will come up with something else to spend it on.

Whenever I get a new device the most common reaction I get these days is not "wow! That's cool! I want one!" Instead it's, "What was wrong with your old one?" or "What does this one do that your old one didn't".

The bottom line is that smartphones have started to plateau like PCs did when we were all told that the PC is "dead". They've reached a point where you can buy one and use it pretty much until it dies and you won't feel like you're missing anything. We've simply come to the end of the days of people buying a flagship phone every 1 or 2 years like clockwork.

Yeah, I don't care for that. We generally pay our phones off over time, but 3 years is ridiculous. While we hold on to our phones for 2.5 to 3.5+ years I'm not of the mind to still be paying on it past the 2.5 year mark.
