So programs such as the mail app could not simply be placed onto the ipod touch and ran? Do they use different libraries?

No, they do not have to be re-compiled, the only catch is they have to be from a 1.1.1 version of the iphone. You would take certain libraries onto the touch. But weather, google earth (maps), notes all work without any library stuff, but mail and calander need extra stuff. I have all the iphone apps running on my touch (Including the program used to actually call people, and the ipod+video apps, where on the touch they are normally two different things.)

So no, they do not need to be recompiled, they will work as is. If some people want to know exactly what files they need I can tell them, just pm me and I get you asap.
