I'm starting to get worried - if iPhone is super popular and accessible will it lose its caché if everyone is walking around with one, or will it still be everything the hype has made it?

this shouldn't be the reason to own one. regardless, i doubt the iphone will be as saturated as the razr was/is.

I think it's been shown that it's almost impossible for any Apple product to lose it's cool.

Is that true for the iPod?
Some people feel so...one of the only reasons SanDisk has any customers...

Is that true for the iPod?

Is it true for Apple computers?

I think it's been shown that it's almost impossible for any Apple product to lose it's cool.

Don't know about that, George Bush has an iPod.

But didn't the Razr have some appeal before everyone in the free world owned one?

I was a *very* early adopter of the RAZR [I think I paid 249.00] and remember getting many compliments on the phone's design [now I just cringe].

Agreed. Where the RAZR went wrong ironically enough is in dropping the price. They were practically giving them away a year after introduction. To maintain brand appeal, you have to give the illusion that the product is not universally attainable. Thats why, although I'm sure the iPhone price will come down over time, and other cheaper models introduced; you'll never see the "buy 1 get 3 free" deals happen. That, along with a single carrier in the US, should help it maintain it's exclusivity and Apple's profit margins.

yea me too

Yes, that is why I will buy up all the U.S. supply MUHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!! :p

Seriously though, I think that people will look at first adopters as fools... I remember laughing at someone who bought the first gen 5GB iPod. I think I said something like, "why would you want to pay that much (I don't remember the exact dollar figure, but it was north of $500) for a mp3 player?" Fast forward 6 years, and I now have three iPods. ;)

The iPod was truly revolutionary, the iPhone is simply evoltionary.

I think people overestimate the revolutionary-ness of the iPod.

Don't get me wrong, I love the iPod, I have had many over the years, and Apple did many things absolutely right, to perfect, on the iPod... from marketing, to design, to integration with the Mac, everything.

But using your words, I'd call both the iPod and the iPhone evolutionary.

They're both big steps forward I think, the iPod for MP3 players, and the iPhone for mobile phones.

And really, I think you only need to be evolutionary to be profoundly successful.

The iPhone doesn't do much that existing smartphones have done for some time. But everything it does, it does better (or at least it seems like it will do better).

I'm excited for one.

Josh

Exactly!

BTW I knew people who got Sandisk player because A. they like the company based on past experience B. because it was the only 6gig player on the market while the rest were at 4gigs or C. because you can get a 8gig model with a 2gig Micro(or is it mini)SD for less than a 8gig Nano. Plus rockboxing is simple.

It sounds like you want one because you think it will make you look cool / important. Not because it would be useful for you in some way. I hate to burst your bubble but there is no exclusive iPhone club. Anyone who wants one can waltz into an AT&T or an Apple store and buy one. You don't even have to have frosted hair!

Maybe you should start smoking cigarettes if you want to look cool.

Worst. Thread. Ever.

Agreed.

Don't worry OP, there are billions of poor people out there who'll never be able to afford one.

Wrong.

Anyone who denies that a certain kinship exists among Mac users is ignorant.

Perhaps you didn't understand the question. I was questioning what would happen to the hype of the product, not the factor of coolness that one gets from carrying it around. If it went the other way, my apologies.

And thanks for the worst thread ever post, that is quite original. And if you would look for a second around the actual forum you will realize that this is certainly not the worst thread. Or p'rhaps you found that the thread about knowing the cousin of the sister of the dead grandfather of the dog walker who works for AT&T tip thread way more informational.

Anyone shallow enough to buy an iPhone to look cool, only gets my pitty.

Anyone who doesn't buy an iPhone because lots of people have it, gets just as much pitty as anyone shallow enough to buy an iPhone to look cool.

Buy things because you like them, they do what you want, etc...just have a reason to buy/not buy.

Let's not take into account the aspect of the user looking "cool" or not... that is not what I intended.

The phone will always be what it is. The amount of people who own it would have nothing to do with that. Again; worst thread ever.

I doubt it, the whole 100 Million iPods thing doesn't seem to have caused a problem. Plus, the supply while likely sufficient for all of us on here to get an iPhone on the first day if you really want it, is obviously going to be somewhat limited and highly sought after by people interested in the phone.

Well look at it this way

Sure the elitist fan boy club is over, but the products are actually better now.

And the reason I always held off buying into Apple stuff was the fear that they would go belly up at any time and I would be left with a very expensive obsolete item.

Well it ain't gonna happen now....he he

I don't want an iPhone for the cachet.

I want it for the cash eh!

:)

I want it because it will make my life easier and allow me to do things I otherwise would not be able to do or would be more difficult to do. The fact that others do that too does not bother me. I sincerly believe the iPhone is going to trigger a fundamental change in the cell phone marketplace, so I think there will be a lot of new features and accessibility from many manufacturers coming down the road.

Yeah, I think I might actually hide mine. I dont plan on showing it off. Use it when I need it, pocket it when I dont. It is a tool.

I'm starting to get worried - if iPhone is super popular and accessible will it lose its caché if everyone is walking around with one, or will it still be everything the hype has made it?

Anyone who buys an iPhone because it is expensive and nobody else has one is just plain stupid. Everybody who says "it is damn expensive, but it is the first phone where I can use hundred percent of the features" and buys it gets exactly what they paid for. And these people don't care how many others buy an iPhone.
