I bought one of the first (old version of firmware 1.1.1) iPhones sold in my city.

I registered it on ATT and paid all the bills. I canceled my service and moved out of the USA and had the phone "hacked" in my new country.

It works very well on the provider Orange.

I want to know if I update to iTunes 8 will I be bricked? Or has Apple given up on trying to do this.

Also, Can I update to iTunes 8 and update the iPhone firmware to the latest and still have an open phone? Or just update iTunes?

ARGGH! Bricked is SO OVERUSED...

If you update to 2.1, you will LIKELY have an unlocked but not jailbroken 2G iPhone. I have a 2G I use when traveling in Canada. When 2.1 came out, I upgraded and the jailbreak was gone, but it was still unlocked (it was an AT&T phone). Simply ran pwnage tool again to re-JB it.

As for Bricked, I continue to believe it is impossible to do. The WORST thing that can happen is the phone will quit booting-and it will either recognize this fact and display the (Steve JOBS) graphic (if JB) and force you to restore, OR, you will have to put it in DFU mode manually.

I believe the term "brick" was created by Apple and the media to discourage hacking on the phone-but with the brilliance of the iPhone Dev Team-it is not an issue.

Can ANYONE really report a truly dead iPhone from unlocked or JB? Especially a 2g?

What's the difference between Unlocked and Jail Broken?

And won't this be an issue with every iTunes update?

Thanks.

no.. because it's impossible to BRICK a phone via software. i've seen one truely bricked phone.. and it was cause some dude put it in the microwave...

people spend 20 minutes and can't fix it and then post here saying it's bricked because they don't have the know-how to "un-brick" it

Not necessarily-Apple tried to work around the pwnage process with 8.XX, but the iPhone Dev team took literally only hours to get around Apple's attempt.

The issue will come up each time there is a new FIRMWARE version, not generally an iTunes software change.
