will let 10.5 install but not 10.3

im trying to install 10.3 on this harddrive 40gb maxtor and when i try to install it says mac osx cannot install on this volume nor be started up on it, but when i put in my leopard disc it will install no problem wtf any solutions ? sugesstions i want my imac g3 working but i put the hd in my emac since the imac doesnt have a dvd and dont really want to buy one and if u think im crazy actually taking my emac apart and putting back togather than call me crazy although its not that hard to get in an emac as some people say,

and there is an error stating... root: bootstrap_look_up(): unknown error code
what does this mean

Use the 10.3 boot disk to wipe the partitions on the HD and start again, making sure you format the Maxtor as HFS+.

yea i did didnt work and then i randomly put the dvd in cause im not going to open up my emac for nothing and i opened the error viewer thing i hit w.e let continue so then it said it would work after i put in leopard but anything from 10.2 or lower doesnt work
