Will Mac Mini be powerful enough?

I'm looking for something that can run FCP X and Blue Iris/security software in support of 5 IP cameras. Video editing is just a hobby, and I'll be editing 1080P. I'm ok with longer render times, but workflow wise if it's jittery or laggy that will drive me crazy. It would also be connected to a Synology NAS for media storage.

Originally I was looking at a Mac Pro, and then iMac 5K, but I think those might be overkill. I already have a 24" Mac Monitor, so if I could get away with a Mac Mini that would be great.

I'm looking at this mac mini - will it be powerful enough?

Definitely. I've done 1080p editing on my 13" rMBP (13" rMBPs and late-14 Minis share the same logic board and parts, my 13" is a 2.8GHz i7, 16GB RAM and 512GB SSD with Iris) and it handles it well. Mainly 1080p editing for home footage.

Since you are going to be editing videos, I recommend an upgrade to the i7. The i7 allows for hyper-threading, which video editing software can take advantage of.

The other spec's are fine.

Mobile i5's also have hyperthreading

Edit: In fact all i3, i5, and i7 processors (Desktop or mobile) have hyper threading with Haswell with the exception of the 4 core i5 desktop processors.

The mobile i5s and dual-core mobile i7s all have hyper threading.

It's only the desktop i5s with quad core that don't have hyper threading.

Performance is almost identical when the core count and thread count is the same.

However, it's a big difference in multithreaded tasks when the core count is the same but the thread count is doubled on the i7.

In dual core i5s and i7s, both have 2 cores and 4 threads, henceforth performing almost identically.

Mobile i5: 2c/4t
Mobile dual-core i7: 2c/4t
Mobile quad-core i7: 4c/8t

Desktop i5: 4c/4t
Desktop i7: 4c/8t
