personally, i'm a fan of the matte. so the mba having glossy is kinda a deal breaker for me. does anyone have a GUESS on whether or not the mba will have a matte option somewhere down the line, or if it will be exclusively glossy like the macbooks?

Glossy seems to be a one way street. I don't see them going back. If anything, over time, fewer and fewer matte notebooks are going to be available, until there aren't any left....

With the way new products seem to be, the question should be "Will MBP's ever get matte screens back?"

Surely the question should be "will the MBP's ever lose the option of matte screens?", seeing as customers still have the ability to choose between matte and glossy at present.

The good news is that although I really hate glossy screens the MBA is ok.

It's so bright that there is no glare with most ordinary light.

I haven't tested it in a variety of lighting senarios though.

Maybe others would care to to add their experiences.

i was a matte guy for years...then I got a glossy on my sony vaio (w/ xbrite screen)...i'll never go back to matte. if you have a quality LCD (like the MBA), you will love gloss. its the cheap ass screens that are dimly lit that look like butt on a glossy finish.

i had a chance to play around with a macbook air for like 3 weeks cus i bought it for my mom in oregon (to save on tax) and liked using it so much that it took a while for me to send it to her in hawaii. it's not so much the glare that i'm worried about. i just don't like it all that much. it's weird cus i bought a matte macbook pro at the same time, and at first, i was regretting not getting glossy on my pro, then after a while, i liked the matte screen better again. i really miss the extreme portability of the air, which is making me think about selling my pro and take a small hit so i can get an air. but no matte screen on the air makes me hesitant.

I've never been a fan of glossy screens and when I first saw the MBA I thought, "uh-oh, a glossy screen..." but I didn't let that stop me from buying one. Happily I have found that at least on the MBA a glossy screen isn't a big issue, either indoors or outdoors, and I have not had any problems with it. However, I will qualify that by saying that my primary use of this machine is for email and participating in online forums, as opposed to doing serious photographic digital image editing. That I reserve for my other machines.

I was thinking about getting the Power Support Anti Glare film for the MBA. Has anyone else tried it? I prefer the matte screen and was hoping to find an alternative to getting the non glossy look.

Just read your review. Really good! Loved all the side-points you made along the way. Nicely thought through & written and an entertaining read. Thanks.

hey thanks :) it certainly isnt like any reviews I've seen out there for the air. It was fun writing it...I'm hoping to do one like that for the iPhone2 soon :-0

I doubt Apple will go back to matte screens. Glossy displays gives Apple the chance to use inferior displays because it's harder to detect them. One only has to take a peek at recent lawsuits and other complaints to see evidence of this.

I had a MB with a glossy screen and I loved the rich blacks. I have a MBP now with a matte and I must say I prefer it for my graphic design projects. But I'm happy with either screen.
