So I have been wanting a MP for several months now, and the new iMac has changed that for me.
I am going to order a 2.8 i7 and was even thinking of maxing out the RAM at 16GB. But, I will never be able to use all 16GB. FCP is my main "heavy" usage and FCP will not use more than 4 (from what I understand).
So, I decided that 8GB would be fine. Looked at Crucial and OWC (as most people do) and discovered the price is not "that" far off...maybe 10-20 percent like someone else here mentioned.
I am thinking I will just get the 4GB (2x2GB) that comes standard, then just order 2x4GB stick from Crucial. Since there are 4 slots now, I will just "add" the 2x4GB sticks and still use the 2x2GB sticks for a total of 12GB.
Will that work??? Can I do 4+4+2+2? This config seems to be the best way to get "at least" 8GB, but gets me 12GB for about the same money.
Oh, and one other question...with regards to getting 8GB...is it better to have 4+4 as opposed to 2+2+2+2? Cause I could get out even cheaper by going with 8GB total instead of 12GB if I go 2+2+2+2. I don't mind the money part, just wondering if I can get some extra performance with 12GB configured as above.
