My late 2009 imac is on its last leg. I've actually had to resort to "baking" the graphics card in the oven as a temporarily fix. Was waiting for a new imac today, but that didn't happen. I'd prefer to wait for a new imac, but I need a new machine bad and the new mini looks to fit the bill as long as I can repurpose my imac's display.

So the question is, I know the late 2009 imac's display can be used in target mode, but does anyone know which graphics gpu drives the monitor? Would it be the mac mini's?

Thanks in advance.

If the GPU is causing artifacting / kernel panics or preventing the iMac from booting up, that would still become a problem, even for Target Display Mode.

Thanks for the quick reply. So right now, my imac boots and works but is struggling after the graphics card bake, it has tiny sparkles as well as blacking out for a second or two every couple of minutes.

So let's say the imac boots, how does the mac mini's integrated graphics work with the target display mode? Does it take over to display the mac mini content or will I still have my blackouts and sparkles?

Aside from the display issues, it's just getting tougher to process data (photos, video etc) so any 2018 mac is going to perform better for my needs. I'd just hate to throw out the display.
