I am looking forward to the iPhone launching on the Orange network in the UK. Use a variety of mobile phones (mostly cheap basic ones) at the minute for work and pleasure and would love to have just the one type of charger for all.
Just noticed on the BBC website that the ITU has approved this micro USB charger and heard that apple has signed upto the change.

Was going to get an iPhone3GS the day it appears on Orange but really am now considering holding off till I can get not only the iPhone with Micro USB charging but all phones I use.

Anyone else think the next iPhone will have micro USB charging?

Oh universal charger..
IMO that will be on the next next next iphone.. or even the one after that..
Remember Apple took 3 editions to bring video onto the iphone..
So universal charger will be around sometime in 2013 or 14..

I don't mean to be obnoxious but I don't think any Apple device will ever have MicroUSB. They aren't that nice and they want us to buy their stuff only. Who knows, they might but I don't really think it's something they would do.

They signed up to the European agreement to standardise mobile chargers.

Personally I think they just change the plug that goes in to the dock connecter so its got a usb socket. A bit like this......

Bad Photoshop by me ;)

Well if Apple want to stay on top of the game then they will, but knowing how Apple have handled things in the past, I would assume they will not do it for the next gen see how things pan out and maybe introduce it in the 5th(2011)/6th(2012) Gen phone.

Apple makes a lot of money licensing the iPod dock connector to accessory manufacturers; I can't imagine that they are going to replace the dock connector with a micro USB and lose all that revenue.

Other than Apple fanboys saying that's the way Apple did it so it must be the best way, why can't it be Micro USB? IMHO, all chargers should be standardized. It sucks to have different chargers for every friggin' thing.

not to mention all the millions of pissed off customers who can no longer use their speaker docks

adding micro usb would enrage many more people than it would benefit

the EU was considering forcing standardized chargers, and if that happened, then we'd probably see microUSB, but like the photoshopped image above. They'd change their charger to allow a microUSB cable to plug into it, not remove the dock connector entirely

standardized chargers are nice, being able to use my $300 bose sounddock is nicer

This. Apple uses the iPod's great market share to make a killing off licensing fees. But a dock connected that was posted above looks pretty spiffy.

They could simply add a micro USB port on the side or somewhere else on the phone, that only charges, and have both the 30 pin dock and a charging micro USB port.

I dont see how it would be so hard for apple to put a micro USB port on one of the sides of the iPhone. It reduces the amount of extra crap we all have to with cell phones and say it is about time they go to a standard.

I think the next iPhone variant will have a charging only micro USB on one side with the dock connector still in place. I too will be glad to see the day when I only need one type of charger for my mobile devices.

I'd bet good money that it won't - I can't see that getting the Jobs seal of design approval. Minimalism, remember? I reckon it'll be an adapter as pictured above.

I hate to sound like a jerk, but you photoshopped a miniusb connection into that picture rather than a microusb connection.

This is microusb.

I would hope apple could go a little farther than that and make it a work like a full fleg USB port as well. It would not be that hard to tie it into the system like they do with there main port. I bet the current docking port has 4 wires that funtion like a USB. Might was well type into those 4 and boom duel USB ports.

I think it really nice to see the universal port being choosen. I hope they go for all cell phones world wide to use the MicroUSB on the phone. no stupid adapter to be used.

your forgetting that the iphone is a computer not a cell phone so there no reason for this thread.
just kidding

i hope they do something creative and i also like the micro usb since my sleek audios uses microusb

Seems so flimsy. Like the charger would pull out if the coil was stretched at an angle. Weren't they doing lightpeak with Intel?

haha yeah right

Apple is notorious for having proprietary connectors ( iphone AV/ new cinema displays, etc) and overcharging

Apple could give a crap about being "universal", that's never been their selling point

They have to, if I remember well enough phone makers now have to use a universal charger in Europe.

To be honest, I think they'd rather be able to have access to a market of 500 million than stick to their "selling point". If they don't do it, they can't sell the iPhone in the EU.
