I just bought a 3rd gen and was wondering if an apple usb was required or if off brands work??...i know this is not Dell, but for example, a non-dell cord wont charge but will only keep it from running off battery....will a non apple charge and transfer???

It's safer to use the Apple USB cable than to use different brands. The other brands could bend something in your iPod Touch, rendering it useless. Better safe than sorry.
