I hope they don't start charging us for it like they do to ipod touch users.
 
It should be. The original reasoning was an accounting basis. The iphone guarantees a monthly revenue stream, while the touch does not.
 
Apple is using an accounting rule that allows them to spread the income of an iPhone across 2 years so they can offer free updates. That being the case, I'd say it will be free for both 3GS and 3G owners. It anyone's guess about older hardware.
