Will photos require to be re-uploaded to the cloud when switching from backup to iphoto Library

HI,

I have been using just the standard iPhone backup to iCloud which has all my photos (50Gb) , if I enable iCloud Photo Library will I have to upload all 50Gb of Photos from my iPhone again or will it just move the Photos from my Backup over to the iCloud Photo Library within the cloud?

I have a really slow upload speed on my internet connection (1Mb up) so if I was required to upload 50Gb it would take a while

It will upload them. Apple’s support document should answer your questions.

“When you turn on iCloud Photo Library, the time it takes for your photos and videos to upload to iCloud depends on the size of your collection and your Internet speed. If you have a large collection of photos and videos, your upload might take more time than usual. You can see the status and pause the upload for one day.”

Don’t worry about the time, though. It’s all invisible to you, whether it takes two days or two months.

I have ordered a iPhone XS and was going to set it up as a fresh phone rather than from a backup (due to all the junk that I've accumulated over the years) , but to get all the photos down to it I would require them to be already uploaded to the iCloud photo Library which they won't be by Friday according to the statement above.

Do you have a Mac? Backup the phone with iTunes and restore to the new phone from iTunes. There isn't any "junk" to be concerned about.

But if you insist on starting with a clean phone, just turn on iCloud Photo Library and leave the old phone powered on and connected to the network for however long it takes. Eventually all of your photos will get synced between devices. It could take weeks on a slow connnection but it’ll work.

The junk I was talking about was lots and lots of unused apps and also messed about with various settings over the years to try and prolong battery life.

I do have a MacBookPro and normally create a local backup as a safety net before updating phones/IOS versions but never needed it recently since the restore from iCloud backup options was available and has always worked.

Think I'll go with leaving my old phone to upload the photos and start my XS from Fresh.
