since AT&T allows 3G calls, does this mean the chances of iChat getting released for iPhone increase?

I'm just thinking the only reason apple hasn't released it yet is because they didn't want to use a lot of data from the AT&T network.

Assuming the next iPhone has a camera on the front

I doubt Apple will release iChat for iPhone because of the headaches it would cause them. There are dozens of IM apps out there that support some/all of the IM technologies. Either free or ad supported.

MobileMe or .Mac chat uses AOL IM technology if I am right.. as such iChat is just a fancy AOL IM Client with jabber support

Check out Bejive, Fring, AOL, Yahoo... etc... just search the app store.
