Will SSD prices go down when new imac launches

or could we even see SSD as standard in the new imacs ... i plan to buy the new i7 27inch imac but i was looking at the price on apple store ... and £615 for a 256gb ssd is too expensive and honestly im not even sure its worth it ( i will use it for regular stuff, im not a photo/video professional)

so am i better off with a regular 1tb drive or should i fork out that extra money when imacs launch?

also im thinking of 4gb ram and buying 8gb from crucial to make it 12gb ... will that be decent enough? or will ram options change?
 
yeah its a good investment if you have some $ to spend. but i wish Apple would have an option for a say 128GB SSD similar to the MBP's + HDD option 1TB, 2TB or 3TB. thatd be a nice option as the SSD doesnt need to be that big when you have the secondary HDD for storage and everything else.

But i wouldn't get my hopes up about it just yet.
 
Nothing computer related is a good investment unless the addition is needed to make YOU money. If not, that few seconds you save loading an app is not worth the price of an SSD. Not even close.

They're not standard in the MBP's ... you gotta pay to upgrade to one.

Why do you think Apple would make them standard on the iMac.

I agree with the previous poster, they are not a good investment unless you like sitting there booting, rebooting, loading and reloading Apps all day just to see how many you can do in one hour.

SSD's have 'wow' factor, but once you utter the word " wow" once even that wow factor goes away.
 
They should just include small blade SSD on iMac board as a standard, like MBA had, 32Gb or 64 Gb is enough, no need for bigger (unless for BTO)

That way iMac won't kill MBA market, since the SSD is small, only for OS and some important apps

I think iMac with SSD as standard will never has negative effect to MBA market, they're intended for totally market and purpose. In fact, they complete each other, imagine you have iMac with blade SSD on your desk, and MBA with the same thing on your lap, what a geek haven

It's different on MBP case, Apple can kill MBA market by just putting SSD as standard configuration for MBP, they both for mobile market, and MBP is much more powerfull but lack of SSD speed

So if MBP is just as snappy as MBA, why even bother buying MBA for a bit less weight and crappy processor? (though i still love MBA design, pure sexy and beauty)
 
thanks you guys .. yea i think i will stick with the 1tb hdd .... saves me £615 thats a lot more in $ ... plus the saving on ram ... 8gb is £70 from crucial .. i would have had to pay extra £480 for 16gb apple ram .. woah saving of over £1000 ... imac 27 i7,1tb hdd, 4gb ram (+8gb from crucial) .. decent enough for me

the most power intensive thing i do is make some electronic music .. looking forward to lion too.

Try to write this post about the crappy C2D in the MBA forum and be ready to part with your head :)

The guys who buy a MBP are perfectly aware they can get a SSD instead of HDD, and they can even have a SSD besides a HDD by removing the OD.

I have compared the loading of Eclipse environment on my iMac i3 and my colleague's MBA 13" and I have to say that the loading speed is not dramatically faster on the MBA. What the MBA gathers by having a SSD is lost because of the slower processor, they are perfectly balanced (overpriced for what they do) computers.

To the OP - iMacs are equipped with very fast and snappy 7200 RPM drives. I don't think SSD as much of an upgrade to iMacs as to the slow 5400 RMP drive found in laptops. I'd rather wait for the price of SSD come down before purchasing one for my iMac.

The whole point of MBA is its smaller form factor. 13" MBP with 128GB SSD is only 50$ more than 13" MBA with 4GB of RAM. That 50$ gets you a lot more power and also upgradeability. You could also go with aftermarket SSD and actually save money.

The people who want MBA would buy it even if MBP had SSD as well.
 
I'm not hating mba here. Just saying that mba processor RELATIVELY crappy compared to new mbp or imac.

Like i said i'd rather have imac on my room + mba for the go than having mbp + cinema display as the only computer

Sure they cost more, but i'm not going to buying them on the same time. I've planned to buy next refresh mba.

But if current mbp equipped with ssd as standard feature, surely mba will lose some of its charm as a snappy macbook, apart from its sexy and super thin design, which i adore so much
