That would be a nice gesture. He should give him 2. One to bring back to Ballmer. Maybe even with personal engraving on the back, "Touch this..." :D

Would be brilliant marketing move to give Gates one. Everyone would know about it and Gates would have to comment how revolutionary it is.

Gates visited the integration lab at my company one afternoon (he's the 2nd largest investor in my company).

When most folks visit, they ask the usual pilot questions (about the flight computers, autopilot, engines et. al.). When Bill visited, he asked questions you'd expect from a computer nerd (what kind of processors were used in each box, amount of memory... you know, nerdy stuff). It was kinda weird... I figured he'd be that 19-year old nerd as I had always pictured him. To see him as a 50-something-old guy was bizarre.

He had nice shoes though, I gotta hand him that.

Bill can give him a copy of Vista Ultimate to run on his(Steve's) Mac in exchange.

Then Steve can look about as disappointed as Justin Long receiving his C++ GUI Programming Guide.

I would not be at all surprised.

If Steve did give Gates an iPhone today, tomorrow Microsoft would release the Microsoft Communications Table, a combination of Surface and a collapsible table, complete with a coupon for the next Service Pack for Vista. Yay.

If Gates is quick enough, his response should be "Wow, thanks! I can't wait to take it apart and figure out how to make a better one!"

I think that'd get big laughs from both camps. :D

When everybody finishes laughing, Gates says, "What's so funny?"

I don't see why he wouldn't. I also don't see why Gates wouldn't use it. Microsoft doesn't make any devices like it, so he could use it. Contrary to fanboy beliefs, Apple and Microsoft aren't enemies.

No, seriously. You know there are microsofties out there that would get a kick out of seeing Bill twist Steve's tail.

And heck, if he can figure out how to improve his own software design, everybody wins. :)

Microsoft makes Windows Mobile, which it would like potential iPhone users to use...did you hear the joke at the end of today's Jobs interview? It counteracts against your final point...

When bringing up that iTunes is considered by some to be the best piece of Windows software, Jobs says its like giving someone in hell a glass of ice water.

And contrary to popular belief, Bill Gates and Steve Jobs aren't enemies either. I believe Jobs has said publicly that they have dinner on occasion.

In most venues, Gates has actually spoken very highly of Apple. PBS did a great one and one sit down with Gates several months ago, and he was complimentary of Apple.
