Apple is clearly focusing marketing on the 10.5". They didn't even send out review units of the 12.9". I'm very happy they did a full update of the 12.9", but does anyone else have a hunch that this may well be the last version of this size released?

I would have also loved a rose gold version, but that's neither here nor there.

Yes, the second gen 12.9" iPad Pro will be the last, its going to be replaced by an 11.7" iPad Pro with reduced bezel size...

no why would they? they are building the ipad pro as a future full time laptop replacement. It is sure as hell more likely a laptop replacement to be of 12.9 than it is for 10.5. They might make future 12.9 thinner but thats it. They didn't mention the 12.9 due to wanting to market the new 10.5 screen size. Basically the specs are close for both just there is a better screen and more overall power in the 12.9

Apple certainly wouldn't of given the 12.9 the same specs if it had plans to remove it. Would be very foolish given how they are marketing the ipad pro's now.

The screen is better and it's more powerful? Where did you get that from? The specs are exactly same the screen size is just different.

The resolution is better on the bigger model even if PPI is the same

Reviews have said you can tell no difference, and what about the power? They are exactly the same. I like them both, but I went with the 10.5. The 12.9 is just too big for my tastes.

I'm talking strictly benchmarks numbers. Not that they mean anything to be honest.

I thought about the 10.5 but thought the multitasking features would be better suited on the 12.9

Yeah that is where the 12.9 shines is multitasking. If you need multitasking a lot, the 12.9 is the way to go.

Wouldn't reducing the bezel increase the display size? So replaced by a 13.5 or something?
No,there will be a 11,3 inch in the size of the current ipad 10.5.(perhaps a little bit bigger)
My guess is in the next 3 years.

LOL i really don' t know.
But the 12.9 inch in its current form factor is just too big.
When oled arrives on the ipad and they have the techique to implement touchid in the display, they might reduce bezels and have a one size iPad Pro at 11,5 and a mainstream/cheap ipad 9.7. Just 2 iPads.
But since oled is limited in supply , it will take at least 2 to 3 years/gen.

For next year, there are 3 options:
1. Apple updates the 10.5 inch display to the same res as the 12.9 inch iPad Pro (326dpi), and stops with the 12.9 inch ipad
2. Apple updates the 12.9 design to the 10.5 design with smaller bezels but the same 12.9 inch screen, which makes it more portable
3. Apple updates the design of the 12.9 to the 10.5 design with smaller bezels, but gets a bigger screen, maintaining the current footprint/size of the iPad Pro 12.9.

I think they' ll choose option 2 for next year, and if the sales numbers declines, they' ll go for a 11.3 to 12 inch iPad Pro the year after.

They might make one with smaller bezels, but I don’t see them discontinuing the only iPad that can do side by side full size apps.

Probably because everything new in the 12.9" model is included in the new 10.5" Pro, but the 10.5" is a brand new product. The new 12.9" looks exactly the same as the previous model. Sending review units out for that size is almost pointless.

They are hoping the 10.5 will save their butts. The 12.9 isn't going to save anything.

(BTW, I own, and like the 12.9)

As I said marketing the pros as laptop replacements and then dumping the bigger size is not smart business. To make these things true laptop replacements they need to be big. No point having something replace your laptop purely on a smaller size.

12.9 is very big but if you are using it for productive work and using it as a laptop replacement the size is very much justified.

True multitasking can really only be great on the 12.9 model personally.

I think it's more they are hoping IOS 11 future features will save the ipad line more than anything else.
