Hello all,

My iMac 5k (now out of warranty) has a blown logic board thanks to a crappy UBS hub that shorted out. It's been sitting at MicroCenter for a week and they seem to have an internal issue with ordering the part.

If I take it to an Apple store, will they replace the logic board (chargeable, of course) even if I upgraded the drive to an SSD a while back? It's already out of warranty and Apple Care.

I'd hate to pull it from MicroCenter due to impatience if they refuse to look at it due to a modification.

I can't say for certain but when I took my 2014 MacBook Pro to an Apple store to get work done they said it was Apple's policy that they can't work on your device if you have any third party components in it, even if you're willing to pay. I had a third party battery in after a repair elsewhere for water damage that Apple doesn't cover. I ended up having to replace it myself with an OEM one from iFixIt. But I'm not sure if that policy applies to parts like a drive that you would expect users to remove and/or replace at some point (before they were soldered of course). I'd definitely check with Apple before making an appointment with them and pulling it from MicroCenter.

I've had my Mac fixed no numerous occasions with third party RAM and hard drives installed, each time with no issue.

Your best bet is to use Apple's online chat feature (it's under Support) and you can ask the question directly.

Hm, maybe I just had a bad experience. I even chatted with an Apple representative and explained the third party battery before making my appointment and they said that it was fine and then when I got to the store they said they couldn't work on it because of it.

I'd say it's more because bad batteries explode and they don't want to take the chance. Hard drives and RAM are both pretty innocuous by comparison.

That's true. I do remember the worker at the store saying they couldn't work on it "if any third party components have been installed" but he may have just been incorrect.

Thank you for the replies. I am going to give them another day but contact Apple support in the meantime to see.

An Apple Store?
After you modified it internally?
Almost certainly.... NO.
