It is obviously going to be a video playing device with wifi and probably a hdmi output.

Use the touch screen to find your stuff then plug into you HDTV to watch. Or perhaps you have something like Time Capsule with a 4Tb which is connected to the TV which the tablet controls?

The Tablet might connect to existing TVs via wifi, offering greater functionality and a full Safari browser?

Or completely stupid idea?

What Apple Tablet? And the ATV is no where near the same device as any tablet.

They're no where near the same product whatsoever. Why would Apple make a device that would require you to get off the couch and plug into your TV? That's kinda a de-evolution from using a remote + Apple TV isn't it.

So while my tablet is plugged into the TV, I can't do anything with it? Why not use an iPod to do that?

I don't understand how a tablet could replace the AppleTV...

7" (HDD?) based iPod Touch alike which connects via some kind of wireless protocol to a dedicated charging dock, which in turn has HDMI and optical out.

Gives you a nice big tablet to take around to watch stuff on the go but also a dedicated full colour touchscreen remote control for an AppleTV like experience when in the home.

Can't see it. If you hold the tablet and stream wirelessly to the TV, performance and battery life becomes an issue. If you dock the tablet to the TV, it's out of reach and not easy to use.

The tablet would make a superb media-rich remote for a home media solution (Mac/PC server & Apple TV & TV/stereo) though.

Why would I want a touch screen interface on a device that sits across the room on a shelf under my television?

I can see it happening. It's a logical extrapolation...

Today, you can dock an iPod to playback the audio content it contains on a Hifi system.

In the future, you will be able to dock a Tablet to playback the video content via your TV.

In addition, just like the plethora of 3rd party docks for iPod's you can probably expect to see a similar variety of dock type solutions for a Tablet including TV's and AV-Receivers with built-in docks.

The tablet can be to video exactly what the iPod is to audio and remove the need for an AppleTV appliance.

In the future, you will be able to dock a Tablet to playback the video content via your TV.

I don't want to "dock" a $600 tablet with a screen to playback video content. What I want is a small footprint Ethernet-attached appliance permanently stationed next to my TV(s).

See the difference between the two?

No way.

I don't want to dock and undock or plug and unplug some big-screened device to my TV. The Apple TV is connected to my TV.. it sits there and it stays there.

A tablet would be a nice cousin to the Apple TV... have something like the remote app, except more flashy, to browse through your media and begin playing it on the Apple TV.

yeah i haven't seen a tablet around any Apple stores in my area either. the ATV probably will just be phased out, not replaced.

The Apple tablet isn't in stores yet, but there are many rumours that Apple will soon release one (which is what the OP was getting at). Search Google or MacRumors and you'll see that there's a lot of specualtion about it - makes for quite interesting reading.
