Will the expected WWDC Merom Macbook Pro be a Rev A again?

Hello all,

As we widely expect the Merom Macbook Pro to be released at WWDC, will it mean that the machine returns to 'Rev A' status?
If so, will we be back to square one with all the hardware issues, and when could we expect a "reliable" Merom MBP?

To be clear, my Macbook Pro is as 'reliable' as they come...there's a lot of moaning in these forums, but compared to my old PC (and my friend's PCs and my mom's PC), the Macbook Pro is extremely, extremely functional and well-built.

The only machine that I've seen surpass it in quality of build (but not speed or functionality) would be my 12" iBook (which I purchased last August) - that thing was seriously built to last. The Mac Mini that my sister has, on the other hand, has had a few problems with its Airport card, but other than that is also a very reliable machine.

To answer your question, though - the Merom CPU is actually pin-compatible with the Core Duo chip that's already in the MacBook and MacBook Pros. Basically, Apple could simply start installing the chip without making any other changes and they'd be able to ship them to the public. So yeah, the Merom Macbook Pro's should be more a 'Rev B' product, unless of course Apple completely redesigns the computer from the ground up.

Hopefully it will be treated as a later revision... as AvSRoCkCO1067 said, since both CPUs are pin-compatible, it'll just be an update of the current design.

Although the 15" MBP really needs a faster, dual-layer DVD burner and the case will probably have to be a little thicker to accommodate that (or the drives will have to get thinner), I expect the only change in the MBPs will be the 1st generation, pin-compatible Napa Merom, installed in the existing models (it could be installed in any of the current Intel Macs). Why? Because Apple's already having to redesign the motherboards for the even faster 2nd generation Santa Rosa Meroms due out in the first half of next year.

Agreed! I highly doubt we'll see MBPs at WWDC.

And I thought I was reading the Merom is pin compatible, but is bigger slightly or the or something is different that might require a change.

i couldnt agree with you more, a lot of people do not give the Macbook Pro the credit it deserves.

Merom isnt THAT good. Its good, and its going to get put in MB(P)s, but its only 20% faster. Thats what, a few seconds at most? I dont understand why people are waiting. iBook G4 --> MacBook was certinaly the biggest upgrade interms of CPU preformance. Granted, some people need the best preformance, but most dont.

Heya, I'm new here. I've been following macrumors for quite a while and I finally decided to register!

Doubt we'll see new MBPs just yet. Sept would be a more realistic timeframe. No major redesign either once they do arrive. Although the MBP is based on the PB G4 design, every single component apart from the power button, keyboard and probably lid release button are all new. I don't quite see them changing their fabrication methods & moulds in under a year and before going through a couple of revisions. Just my 2 cents.

It won't *revert* to old problems - that wouldn't make much sense since they were already addressed.

It may have new problems instead.
