Will the iPhone ever have a "group text"? IE chatroom like.

I know that I can send the same text to multiple people at once but what I wish was possible, was the ability to carry on a conversation with multiple recipients, whose response would also be distributed to everyone in the "group text". Basically a chatroom for texting. Being in college atm, there are numerous times when I need to ask or answer questions about a project and it would be nice if everyone in my class/group could be in on the same conversation.
 
I don't think the SMS protocol can support this... you need a proprietary IM format to do it. FWIW, BlackBerry Messenger can do this, either with a conference chat, or with the new groups feature.
 
I think the main issue is that in order to do that, all recipients would have to have group chat texting also. Otherwise the chat would become disjointed when the first person sends a response.

What if the originating phone was responsible for re-distributing all the texts from non iPhone users? iPhone users would be able to communicate with everyone in the "chat" because the relevant information would be forwarded to their phone when the "chat" was started. Non iPhone users could be kept in the loop with the following?

phone A texts phone B and C.

phone C texts phone A back.

phone A sends phone C's response to phone B.

Then I hope you have a large text plan.

You'd be better off using IM on your iPhone or sending an e-mail if you don't need to know "now". Although once google wave gets more prominent that might take care of it for you too.
 
What you're talking about is not something that can be implemented as a feature of the iPhone or any other phone. What you're talking about is a change to the SMS protocol, something that would have to be done worldwide and which would make all current cell phones obsolete. Not to mention that I don't think any network really wants to implement it.

I agree.
It's not happening. It's not an iPhone limitation it's a worldwide SMS standard.
