Where have you heard this rumour?

AppleInsider didn't post any such rumour, and AI has quite a collection of Apple related rumours.

Also the iMac was just updated (Feb 2009) and the design is not even 2 years old.

That rumour wouldn't fit into Apple's design and update pattern.

I've heard the speculation on many sites, including MacRumors. It makes sense to me. But it is still only a rumor in my mind till will see legit info from Apple.

I am pondering that it could be true by the introduction of Snow Leopard NEEDING a new display/hardware to market the new OS. It would be wise for apple to release a new machine while releasing a new OS for marketing/selling reasons.

Well, hope more people join and make some good posts...

I agree that sl will debut when the new imac is released this fall. That will make the current design 2 years old.

Why would it? Every machine they sell now is more than capable of running SL

Nope, Apple really doesn't "need" to release new hardware just to market their new OS. The OS will sell itself.

The once SL hits they will just pre-load their current hardware with SL and offer a upgrade path to people who recently bought a Mac within 30 days or so.

SL won't offer anything special that only new hardware can utilize and should run on any intel based Mac.

Previous releases of OS updates have not launched with new hardware, so why should this one....

I gave you my reasoning - for marketing purposes. Apple is best at that. I wouldn't be surprised by some sort of new hardware with SL. I am not saying our machines are not capable. My opinion is purely based on Apple marketing their previous products...and I also think there is a sales perk.

You realize they just updated their entire line right?

The only thing I can think of is the macosrumors - which had a different iMac coming out - Xerces had to fess up that he thought something was coming (the little reputation of the site took a hammering, as the rest of the rumors were primarily reheated ones, and the posts weren't first to new material/info).

I like the concept though - MB and MBP get an upgrade - iMac gets a slight redesign, Mac Pro is Nehalem. (mini is lucky it's there...)

macosrumors - saw a i7 Nehalem iMac at the March event.

but looking at the Buyer's Guide -
Product iMac
Recommendation: Buy - Product recently updated
Last Release March 03, 2009
Days Since Update 73 (Avg = 220)

The smallest gap between models seems to have been 3 months. Not like they're going to make an iMac Pro. Would point towards nearer September, no?

Unless you can point out the actual rumors - and if they're on MacRumors they're findable as someone will have seen them - then it's a phoney thread it seems for now.

And we gave your reasoning for why they are not going to release new hardware with SL. SL doesn't need new hardware to sell, Leopard didn't need new hardware to sell, Tiger didn't need new hardware to sell.

I don't think we will see 'nehalem' based iMac's until ~ March 2010 at the earliest.

The current low power nehalem processors are just too slow, 1.73Ghz I think.

Seems to me Apple is waiting on the Lynnfield (energy-efficient) based nehalem processor, which is possibly expected Q1 2010.

And since the iMac uses laptop parts, the CPU speed increase won't be dramatic for the next release. I rather see a LED LCD, SSD and one or two eSata ports. An iMac w/ an SSD and RAID0 or 10 external eSata enclosure will be dramatically faster w/ transfer speeds of over 200MBs.

I'm female and I have absolutely no idea but will that be a huge speed increase from the current model and from mid last years model? I have a low range 20" from mid last year and am wanting to buy a 24" eventually but not sure when to upgrade

I doubt that the 2010 iMac will be appreciably faster than the current model. I think, from what I read that Snow Leopard (OS X 10.6) will bring bigger improvements in performance than the current iMac Vs 2010 iMac. ツ

The best advice I can give you is to buy a the best iMac you can afford, when you need it. The current iMac's are blazingly quick. You'll love it.

keep up the posts everyone. It seems I am getting shut down for the most part...LOL. But, my opinion stays the same. I would also like to see eSATA's on Mac's as a previous post mentioned.

Apple is not going to release a version of OSx like Snow Leopard that will not run on machines it is now selling. Anything you buy today from Apple will still run Snow Leopard.

...and all the touted performance improvements have been tested using an iMac!

*Performance will vary based on system configuration, network connection, and other factors. Benchmark based on the SunSpider JavaScript Performance test on a 2.8GHz Intel Core 2 Duo-based iMac with Mac OS X Snow Leopard and 2GB of RAM.
All features on this page are subject to change.

Has there ever been a new OS that focuses on performance, not features?

I have been thinking along those lines for quite some time...That's a great point. I feel this time around may be different for Apple, and we may see new hardware debuting with the new OS. - one more reason for my OP.

we'll see...
