Hi,

The new AppleTV is rental only for TV shows and movies.
Will this affect the current model?
Will I still be able to BUY TV episodes and movies or will that end when the new one is released?

Regards

9to5 says older AppleTV gets no update :(

We confirmed with an Apple spokesperson that the maximum HD resolution of the Apple TV is 720p, consistent with recent rumors. Additionally, there will be no software update to bring the new features to older Apple TVs. Older Apple TVs will continue to work as they have been working up to this point, and they will continue to be able to purchase movies and TV shows even though the new Apple TV is rental-only.

But it will function as it always has, you can buy movies etc.

The only thing that sucks is we won't get airtunes to push media to your tv from other devices.

Hopefully someone comes out with a hack down the line. At least now that Apple has basically abandon this product we can mod the hell out of it without worries that Apple will update it and break the hacks.

Thanks, dissdnt. Good to hear.

BTW, the current AppleTV does have AirTunes.

Ah, yes. Cool indeed.

But I'd rather have the ability to buy and store video on the box.

As had I, which is good, since I have one of the older Apple TVs, but I am gratified to find out that you can still buy TV seasons and movies and simply store them on your computer and then stream them over with the new one...I only hope the streaming has improved...mine sucks a lot of the time...

With a N router that is not too far way, I find streaming HD works fine with the original Apple TV too.

Before I had the N router, it was awful.

You know, that may be part of my problem...I have my dsl plugged into my Mac Mini and then I am sharing the connection via airport, and that is what my Apple TV is picking up...I may need to invest in a router....

keep in mind that this means you will also NOT have access to .99 tv shows on the old ATV.

They can be rented in iTunes and streamed or synced to the "old" AppleTV.
