Yes, they did say that they are working on a new Mac Pro. Phill Schiller also said this:

"On that I'll say the Mac Mini is an important product in our lineup and we weren't bringing it up because it's more of a mix of consumer with some pro use. … The Mac Mini remains a product in our lineup, but nothing more to say about it today."

……. Which does suggest that there will be an updated Mac Mini at some stage, though gives no indication of when. Most updates have come without much fanfare.

Nothing in what he said suggests anything happening with the Mac mini beyond what is currently happening. Only wishful thinking could make one reach the conclusion you did.

Much of life as a fan of Apple desktop products consists of wishful thinking :)
It is amazing, I have/had 4 family members who have been ready to buy an updated Mini for around 2 years now. One has moved on already, and the other 3 will within the calendar year. Apple can potentially lose 4 households, because they don't want to lose the sale of a single iMac/MBP to a respectable mini.

Great move Apple!!

I'm in the same boat. I have an existing monitor/mouse/keyboard setup. I won't buy an iMac for that reason, and I can't afford a Mac Pro. So here I sit and wait, while Apple has no product that fits me because they're afraid of losing a sale that won't happen anyway.

I don't see anything in that statement that suggests they will update the Mini. And at the same event he said Apple had a "two prong desktop strategy" that includes the Mac Pro and iMac. That does not suggest much of a future for the Mini. ;)

In corporate speak, it translates to: "We have decided to discontinue the mini, but are not prepared to make that announcement at this time."

Nothing in what he said suggests anything happening with the Mac mini beyond what is currently happening. Only wishful thinking could make one reach the conclusion you did.

A decade ago there were predictions of the imminent demise of the Mac Mini, yet it is still with us, and methinks likely to remain part of the lineup. Sure it may not be the machine that the average geek dreams of, but it is adequate for the needs of many average folks.

Latest news has been Appleinsider saying that the Mini was going to be discontinued.

I've been waiting for the Mini to be updated to Core 2 Duo and 802.11n. I've been waiting for what seems like an eternity. I haven't heard any rumors about what might replace the Mini. Surely somebody must know what Apple is thinking in this area. Have there been any rumors?

The only complaint I have about the Mini is that I'd rather it be a little large and accommodate a 3.5" drive so that I could put in a terabyte drive and really use it as a media server.

Things are proceeding pretty much along the same lines as they have been since 1984.
When Apple's decide to terminate a product, they often just go silent about it.
It's a good way to clear out current inventory. Leaves some folk pretty pissed though, when they're among the "last to buy".

The classic Mac Pro? Sure it wasn't updated with the best option, but after going SO LONG without an update or even hearing anything we got the 2013 Mac Pro. And again, it has been years since even THAT was updated and we FINALLY just heard something about it. I am pretty sure the Mac Mini was updated around the same time as the Mac Pro. People seem to act as the Mac Mini was last updated 10 years ago or so.

It was updated in October 2014. If you had followed the course of the Mini you would understand why people are disappointed. The 2014 models were a step backwards from the 2012 in many ways: soldered RAM that cannot be upgraded, base model that is slower than the 2012 base mini and the 2012 quad core was 50% faster than the top of the line 2014 mini.

I remain skeptical as to whether there will ever be a new mini. And even if there is, I suspect it will still be slower than the 2012 quad core mini.

And people were upset with how the 2013 Mac Pro turned out. Doesn't mean the Mac Pro is dead because they said they are working on a new one.

Skeptical is OK. There are a lot of us who still have hope that there will be a new Mac mini.

The mini is a capable produte and it is very versitile. But given Apple's greed, they will either nip it or invent some kind of bogus "upgrade" to jack up the price in the next few generation.

Unfortunately they have not said they're working on a new Mini. In fact, they said they have a "two prong desktop strategy" than only includes the iMac and Mac Pro. ;)

They also haven't said the Mac Mini is dead either. Just like they haven't said the Mac Pro was dead until they mentioned in recently.

Since you seem to be parsing words, please read again exactly what I said. At no time did I say Apple was planning to kill off the Mac mini. Do I believe it will be updated anytime soon? No. And even if it was, do I believe the update would be a compelling new product? No. Do I also believe it isn't a wise financial choice to buy almost 4 year old technology for the same price as it was back then? Yes. Do I expect any of this to change your mind? Absolutely not.

Please accept my heart-felt and humble apologies for my failure to catch on to the subtle nuance of your carefully chosen words. To a barbarian pleb the intricacies of American language can result in a loss of detail. I consider myself chided, and will treat your words of wisdom, insight and foresight, with the respect they deserve.

Given the title of the thread…… Nothing in what Phil Schiller said indicates that nothing is happening with the Mac Mini beyond what is currently happening. Wishful thinking it may seem in the opinion of some (who feel they know more), others (who know no more) come to the conclusion that something is happening.

As to financial choices….. The current Mac Mini, and the eight year-old one I am using now, cost about the same as the original I bought in 2005, but it comes with improved specs, free OS X / MacOS upgrades as well as apps that suit my needs. Seems a reasonable financial choice to me, though others may not come to the same conclusion. Each to their own; so be it.

Do I expect any of this to change your mind? Absolutely not. Do I give a hoot? Nope.
