iPad Air 2 lasted 2 years without a release.
iPad Pro 9.7 went more than a year.

Apple has been known to stretch the calendar with iPads. It really builds value. I think if ever. They will stretch this generation to June 2020 and make a big announcement there. And thus have 2 major hardware launches per year.

I mean TSMC is already back logged there are only so many Fabs pushing out 7nm CPUs and the majority of TSMC’s fans are booked through 2025. If it’s not Qualcomm, it’s Apple, or AMD,
We just aren’t gonna get a 7nm A13 AND a 7nm A13X this year, even iPhone sale have been very poor. I won’t buy a cellphone without a Qualcomm Chipset period. Which is why I skipped the iPhone X and XsMAX versions.

There just 24 hours in a day and these fabs run 24 hours straight. And the productions runs are tightly scheduled.

People keep asking this lol. Apple seems to be on a pretty relaxed schedule with iPad’s. It is obviously still a safe bet to buy one right now, and enjoy it for a longtime.

I seriously feel like people can never be happy. Apple could release a brand new device, and after a couple months everyone is is like;

“Is Apple releasing a new one yet” ???

^ Haha

They release cars every year too, they are much more expensive and that doesn’t stop people from buying like crazy and trapped for years with tons of negative equity usually.

I bought my very first iPad in my life this year. It was January of 2019, only about a full month right after the release of the iPad Pro 3rd gen models. And I have been enjoying it very much! And I look forward to another 12 months at least with this one I have now.

It is a beast, and I love it!

If you want to wait, by all means wait until the cows come home man.

I want to upgrade to iPad Air('19) from Air2, but scared that they might release a much better version next year. Currently, there is not much performance difference to justify the purchase.

On the other hand, I am afraid they give the current Air the mac-mini treatment and keep it around for 3-4 years and I will be waiting indefinitely.

I can understand the OP’s sentiment. The 2018 iPad Pros are amazingly powerful. However, they’re also very expensive so it’s definitely understandable to be more particular and want to get one’s money’s worth.

Heck, if I had purchased the A9X 2016 Pro 12.9 256GB LTE (which never really went on sale) 6-8 months or so before the A10X 2017 Pro 12.9 512GB LTE (same price), I would’ve been very frustrated. You never really get $1:$1 on upgrades reselling but the price reduction on 256GB would squeeze the resale value as well.

Mind you, my current vehicle was purchased 10 years ago and no plans of replacing it any time soon.

P.S. Around here, we usually don’t wait two months to discuss the next model. We do it immediately after they keynote. Sometimes even earlier. :p

And the next one after that possibly 2021 June to October.

iPad Pros tend to come at intervals of 14-19 months tops. Mostly 15-18 months or so.

you know I doubt there will be updates, the Pros are just too powerful and advanced now. On the hardware side there are hardly any wishlists from people. Any updates next year will be tiny bumps as I don't think mobile chips will advance so much over a year's time.

Ming has confirmed 2 new Pros generations over the next 2.5 yrs or so.

Including OLED/microLED ones.

Yep this is true, let’s break that down real quick.

2.5 years is 30 months.

12 months from now the 4th gen iPad Pro will release. And then 18 months after the 4th gen iPad Pro release the 5th gen iPad Pro release lol

^ That is 30 months. With 2 generation releasing.

More or less. 4th Gen in 6-9 months from now.

5th Gen after another 12-20 months or so.

5th Gen after another 12-20 months or so.

So the iPad Pro 1st gen 12.9 was out 19 months before the 2nd gen launched.

And 2nd gen to 3rd gen was almost 18 months.

Your speculation seems way off. Why would the 3rd gen be the shortest lived iPad Pro?

Is Apple changing there clear pattern? Even the source you mentioned of 2 more Pro generations in 30 months would follow this pattern.

If we count just 17 months from the iPad Pro 3rd gen we are in June of 2020. And this is not counting November of 2018.

I know you are well versed in Apple products and all, and you are a big fan being in the Apple store frequently. But, your math makes zero sense.

You’re saying that the most advanced iPad Pro ever, will also live the shortest ever. And you’re saying Apple is cutting the life off of there most expensive mobile tablets.

I'm pretty content to wait for the 4th gen 12.9 before I upgrade, I'm not expecting it before the middle of 2020 though, and I will probably wait a few months to see if there's any new glitches or issues for it (though hopefully not as I'm expecting the same chassis). So if you're in the market now, I think you should be safe enough buying now. If you wait to October you'd almost then be at the point you'd just as well wait until next March to see what Gen 4 brings to the table.

Just go for it. I did it. Great upgrade.

Apple needs to redesign smart cover to accommodate track pad. My guess--9/20

I would not be surprised to see update sooner than usual. Perhaps something when iPadOS 13 ships. It would be a great time to introduce a model with a trackpad folio keyboard since iPadOS would support it. And would be a way to increase revenue from the iPad line.

I’m just telling you what Ming has said.

He said 4th Gen will come out Late 2019 or early 2020.

I don’t think it will out in 2019.

Early 2020 is March. At the very most June.

That’s what I’m saying.

I was at the Apple Store today checking out iPads. And the thing that struck me was how much of perfect size the iPad mini was. Looking at it next to the iPad Air, the iPad Air actually looked kind've over-big, too large for its own good. The normal old iPad isn't a bad size either, but the mini just seems to be the sweet spot.

Which really begs the question - do you think we'll ever see an iPad Pro Mini?

I would absolutely love this. To me it would be the perfect iPad model - the right size, but with Apple Pencil 2 support (and thus always-with-you-always-charged functionality).

Dear Apple - please make an iPad Pro Mini :D

This.

Give me an iPad Pro Mini in 2020/2021 with:

5G
ProMotion
Quad Speakers
Same specs as other pros
Cellular + 128 GB

Would gladly pay USD 900ish for it. If forced to, then even more.

Im tempted to grab the 12.9 pro, even though i can see them being upgraded in march.

As i'm hitting the road for a year its a little ore portable than my 15 inch MBP, and it'll only be used for paying bills, browsing the net and Netflix while in the camper.

My iPad Mini isn't going to cut it, i like a bit more screen size when watching content.

I would love an iPad mini pro too.
Developers and Apple need a platform for development of apps for a new foldable device, when apple decides to release it. An high end iPad Pro mini with a fast soc, 120hz , quad speakers , faceID and pencil support is the way to go. But a 7.9 inch with the bezels of the current iPad pro’ s will look very dated.
So Apple has to develop a smaller faceid sensor first, to slim down the bezels or go oled for this small version.
