Will there be an iPad upgrades, shortly after the release

I was considering purchasing an iPad, and didn't really know if the 64GB is enough. I wondered whether there would be a storage (or 4G) upgrade shortly after the iPad 3G release in Late April/May

Well i wouldn't mind waiting a couple of month for the 128GB or 4G

Is there any chance that there would be a small upgrade this summer?
 
I don't think it will

Since it is so close to the release of it we most likely won't see it until September or January
 
It depends on what your definition of "shortly" is. If it means next year, then sure there will be upgrades "shortly" :D
 
I don't see any reason for the iPads to follow an update schedule different from that of the iPhone. i.e. one every year in the June time-frame.

At the very least, every year will see bumps to the internal storage, if not also hardware specs - cpu, camera, etc.
 
there will be OS 4.0 this summer with multitasking. hopefully Steve won't charge us for upgrading OS
 
Absolutely not. That's not the way companies deal with products. It would seriously damange public relations and anger customers (ruining their image) if they updated it so soon after releasing it.

Plus I doubt they have anything finished yet for iPad 2.0. Probably some rough ideas where they want to go.

I, for one, am waiting for the 2nd gen. I love the iPad, but Apple's 2nd gen products always cash in more than 1st gen, this is pretty well known, the advantage of being a late-adapter. ;)

I'm banking on either a late 2010/early 2011 update.

This will be the only kind of upgrading that's going to happen any time soon, probably for a year.

I'm eagerly anticipating what kind of coolness 4.0 will bring to the iPad
 
4G:

No way on god's green earth. AT&T wont have its LTE network in place before next year. And it's beyond doubtful, Apple would go with Sprint being that they struck such an awesome deal with AT&T​

128GB:

*IF they decide to do it before the 2nd revision, it would be later this year (and that's a big IF). We all saw that news update of Samsung 64GB NAND flash chips being produced in Q1 2010. So depending on how many flash chips Apple chose to use in the iPad.... it's possible. That possibility should be more evident once people like iFixit dissect the first iPads.​

My bet is we won't see 128gig until possibly Dec 2010 for the holidays, but more than likely they will be on a yearly cycle just like the iPhone for updated hardware.

4G has ZERO chance of showing up in 2010. AT&T has stated many times LTE will only begin rolling out for testing sometime in 2011 and full scale roll outs in 2012. I don't see Apple adding 4G/LTE capable chips until at least April 2011 or more likely 2012.
 
I heard they will release new ipad versions 5 mins after the first version goes on sale! Everyone don't buy the ipad in the first 5 mins. Just wait for the next one.

I hope so too, but I would gladly pay for a multitasking upgrade, since it would be a pretty major upgrade.

Also, I know they don't charge iphone users to upgrade the OS, but they do charge iPod touch users. I'm not sure why that is, but guessing some sort of legal thing. I'm guessing they might have to charge iPad users then, since its more like an iPod touch than an iPhone. Anyone know the reason for this?
 
Dont expect one before March 2011. This will be a once a year update, just like the iphone....just like the ipod....No need for 6 month updates like the notebook/imac lines.

They charge ipod touch users because they dont want the feature set of the ipod touch to match the iphone entirely out of the box. It would cannibalize the sales of the iPhone since they're essentially the same product minus the phone feature. There's no doubt in my mind the iPad updates will be free.

iPod touch users are charged an update fee because it is illegal for Apple to distribute these free software updates to devices sold without any sort of recurring fees, such as a contract.
 
the good thing is that Apple has brought down the price of major updates to $4.95 (previously $19.95). So even if Apple needs to charge for large updates (not bug fix), as long as its not more than $4.95, I'll be fine with that.

at the moment I forgot how Apple accounts for the Apple TV, but those updates have always been free and it doesn't require a contract.
 
If there is an update i would guess it would be in September or later in the year. Apple left a few things out of the ipad so that every one that purchases it on release will re purchase when the update comes out.

Whats with the 16 gig entry level i find this kinda crazy and would not be surprised if it gets dropped in a couple months along with the prices of the higher models. Also not sure why they have a 3g less model and why they charge so much more for the 3g model. What is the manufacturing cost differences like $10.

I am realy kinda disapointed in the Ipad just a little bit more here and there and I would be picking up one on release.

How is this illegal? I can see how it wouldn't be profitable... But illegal?

You're confusing two separate issues.

Apple could not issue major functional updates to hardware products that had already been recognized as having been sold and delivered. The solution was either to employ a subscription accounting (not sales) model or to charge a nominal but non-trivial fee.

It has nothing to do with recurring fees or contracts for the customer.

Apple and several other firms got together and pushed (successfully) for a revision to the revenue recognition rules to allow for a better compromise that would allow free functional updates to hardware products without the disadvantages (from Apple's business perspective) of subscription recognition.

The AppleTV has always been sold under a subscription accounting of revenue.

It's no longer a problem though, given that FASB approved the rules revisions allowing Apple (and any other company) to use a hybrid deferral scheme.

Although GAAP is not itself law in any official sense (except certain provisions that have been codified in Sarbanes-Oxley and other securities laws), compliance with GAAP is required by law. Violating those rules and practices with regard to accounting and revenue recognition opens a company up to liability through shareholder suits and SEC investigation (which can result in fines and/or SEC-initiated lawsuits), and has other onerous implications for a publicly-traded company.
