I need a new phone and a different carrier than AT&T…my iPhone 6 is cracked and the battery is good for a few hours only and I want to try different carriers without a contract because I just moved. I’d like to buy my next phone outright but I read here that sim free (GSM and CDMA) phones get released about a month later than carrier phones. It was my understanding that the Verizon phone is the same so is it still the case that I could order that one from Apple and take it to T-Mobile instead, and then try Verizon later if necessary? Since the new Intel modem offers support for both GSM and CDMA networks are the 2018 iPhones expected to do away with having different models for carriers?

It sounds like it will be easier then, thanks!

The new iPhones coming this year are expected to be the same across all models, yes. No need for carrier specific modems or the like.

wow. i have not heard this before.
it would be great if true...

backwards compatibility to older CDMA frequencies pre-LTE Advanced would need to be lost in order for this to happen.
and newer frequencies that are now becoming main frequencies within China and within Japan would need to be standard on all models for this to happen.

Well the Intel modems that the iPhones are rumoured to use would have it this way
