I am considering purchasing an Iphone (or Ipod touch) and am wondering if any future firmwares will completely eliminate the hacking community? I know some people will probably jump on the SDK bandwagon when released, but what do you people think of the utility of hacking the iphone/itouch with the SDK.

Here is my dilemma,

1) Activated and unlocked iphone (I have verizon) using as an ipod touch with the camera and voice recorder capability

OR

2) Ipod touch with touchmods.net microphone accessory and software

Either way I doubt that apple will ever officially allow software for touchmods microphone or allow activation of an iphone without an ATT plan. So my future iphone/itouch is dependent on the hacking community.

Thank you.

There will never be anything that is "unhackable". Ever. We're too good.

AT&T's exclusivity only lasts five years. Unlock the thing and use it with anyone else. Verizon's going GSM in 2-3 (?) years, so you could stick with them until that happens. When it does, you could have a Verizon iPhone.

Nothing is unhackable. Even if it is, temporarily, you just downgrade it to the previous virgin and hack that.

i´m pretty sure apple doesn´t wan´t that anyways because i mean after all they are still making money of the iphone without the contracts so all they have to do is put in medium effort so they won´t get in trouble with their partners like at&t and the peolple who do hack their device and it breaks won´t get any warranty without at least resetting the thing so it´s a win win
and watter better publicity then all the hackers that do all these amazing things with apple products and just testing cool programs without actually taking legal responsibility ... i love it :)
