I found it really odd that it wasnt something that was included or even mentioned as "coming soon"....I thought that was going to be a sure thing....why wouldnt it? Something as simple as instant messaging has been on the most basic of phones for years...why not this one?

I saw there's a java app..havent had a chance to check that out since my damn phone is still in the activation process 8 hours later (ridic)...but anyway, what are the thoughts on ichat? And how is that java AIM app?

iPhone doesn't run Java... so we'll never know...
But yes, I think Apple will add iChat sooner than later to the iPhone.

as do i .. they left room on the home screen for 4 more apps. i do hope ichat is added soon, and if apple gets enough complaints, it will be sooner rather than later.

so you heard it people, complain, do whatever

just go on online support and tell them the more the word is out the sooner we can expect it..

I have to imagine iChat will end up on the iPhone. With websites already getting it up and running a little bit I'm sure Jobs will step in and launch a "official" iChat program pretty soon. Remember how it went with BootCamp? The forums were racing to figure out how to get Windows working, they finally do and less than a week later BootCamp was announced.

I'm not a fan of paying for chatting, therefore texting is weak for me!

Darn it. I dont have an iPhone but i remember seeing an iChat web app for one. If i find it I will defiantly give you the link.

Otherwise. Does Meebo work on an iPhone? It is browser based so I would give it a try.

:)

i hear it doesn't .. i have faith we will see ichat soon rather than SMS .. i dont think it's at&t refusing to allow it seeing as apple has gotten to do everything their way so far.

you could enable mobile IM through AIM's network + some kind of unlimited text plan through AT&T, right?

this is hardly ideal and i think apple will add an ichat as well.

Meebo sort of works. You can't double click in iphone safari, so opening new windows is a pain, and it crashes when you try to send a message. But it's close, hopefully the meebo folk will have a solution for us soon :)

I was able to sign in using Meebo, but I was not able to expand my buddy list to see everyone, since it requires you to drag the corner of the box. Any ideas on how to make the buddy list window bigger?

I tired it as well. I got an IM from a friend and typed a reply but there was no way to send the message. Meebo uses the return key to send the message but the return key only added a line return. There was no send button to send my reply. :(

Hi, I found a fantastic IM web app for the iPhone

its called jive talk. You can load multiple acount types
You can use:
AIM (AOL instant messenger)
.Mac
ICQ
Jabber
Myspace (havnt used that dont know what its like)
MSN/Win Live
Yahoo!

Its free and runs great, You can log into multple accounts at once and it displays your contact list just like iChat, there are lots of settings too.

Heres the Link

Hope this helps.

It works but if u leave the page for a minute or so you get logged out and have to start over...pretty annoying.

well u can get an ichat for the iphone via jailbreak it works most of the time but it helps to be on wifi and to keep the app open, and to have insomnia running but it drains battery pretty quick

but to answer the main question of the OP they stated in the softwardevelopkit release presentation that ichat will indeed be coming to the iphone, they even told us the program was written, ichat will keep me happy while i wait a year to upgrade my iphone to new new one. i wrote stevejobs an email telling him id palt 500 bucks for ichat on my friggen phone, he didetn take me up on the offer but the presentation confirmed it.

now will the ichat service be internet based? or text messaging based? both aren a problem if u have unlimited txt but some will feel jipped. i had a sidkick for 2 years and i loved it, always on aim and never discconected, it was nice. i eventially felt it wasnt nessesary and got the v3i because i wanted a music and phone combo. it sucked and now i got the iphone which rocks, i was actually suprised there wwas no ichat caus they said it ran osx and was a communication device, well, im, yahoomess, windows bla blahb blah, thoes are important to communciations lol.

long post, im talkative.

i called apple yesterday because we got an iphone on saturday and i was trying to figure out how to do IMs.. so innocently enough i called the support asking them HOW to IM and what is going on with the ichat, how come i do not have it.. the girl laughted and said NO ONE has it and the only way to IM is through the apps that are offered.. HOWEVER she said for CERTAIN that a new upgrade for iphones is going to come out DEFINITELY in the spring that will be ichat for iphones.. I dont know, but this came from an apple employee on the phone from customer service and i did not ask her to tell me, she just said it as if everyone knows it.. She did not say it was the new iphone, but she said it is def. going to be available to current iphone users

I dunno, if you dont believe me, call yourself.. it just somethng i heard

I will be honest with you, The apple reps know maybe slightly more then the average public. The only people that know anything is the Higher Ups and steve jobs. Speculation is deffinately there, but after working for a large cell phone service provider myself, I understand how the corporate world works. They release information on a need to know basis. When the reps are going to have the "sell or support" the new iPhone or their apps, then the reps will be trained accordingly. Just my opinion

How is any of this speculative? They announced iChat in the SDk keynote speech.

No, they didn't. AOL showed off a version of AIM they are working on. It did not include the "bubbles" or any of the other features we would come to expect from an Apple-designed IM client.
