The actual base of the iMac is only appx. 7 inches in length at it's widest point, so if it is an "open air" desk with no height restrictions, how would the 27" be to big?

It doesn't matter whether there is anything underneath the screen...as long as the base is on the desk, nothing will happen.

IMO this is not big enough. The back edge of my 27" is about 25" from the front of the deks, then add a few more inches to give some breathing room for the power cord to extend. This desk is only 20 inches deep. Assuming your eyes can take this and focus that closely, then you will also need to use your head, not your eyes, to scan side to side. I would get something bigger.

Well, first of all, you should never buy desks from Wal Mart. They're cheap and very hollow inside, meaning they won't last long at all, and can't even handle much weight, considering that iMac itself weights about 30lbs.

Go to ikea, they have a much better selection and their desks come with a 0 year warranty.

Take this from a person who has purchased 5 desks from Office Max. I'd need to buy a new one every year, then I just went to ikea and got a very decent one for $160 or so.

Their Galant desks are probably the best http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/categories/departments/workspaces/11716

Check that out. And seeing how you're planning on spending $100 on a desk that doesn't have warranty why not spend $50 more and get a quality desk that'll last you AT LEAST 10 years.

But to answer your question, the iMac is about 25" from one side to the other, and I couldn't find that desk's width anywhere on the site, so you might wanna go and measure it yourself in the store.

The deal is I don't have much room for a desk and I'm trying to find a compact desk big enough for an iMac 27 inch. IKEA seems to huge, and luckily I wished I have the room for that type of desks.

the desk is 42"L x 20"D, so the entire width and depth of the iMac will fit on the desk without any part of it hanging off the desk.
The desk has a key board tray so on the desk itself you will only need to put the iMac unit and assuming the keyboard and mice are on the tray it will add a few more inches of viewing distance from the monitor it shouldn't be a big problem. This is assuming that little shelf thing at the back of the desk can be removed, if it is stuck there, it will shorten the viewing distance even more.
But, I would recommend getting a deeper desk, I have my 27" iMac sitting on my desk that's 30" deep and the viewing distance is just right for me, I can see the entire screen with no trouble and everything is a good size. The length of the desk though will not be much of a problem.

not all Ikea desks are huge, they have many different sizes, you can consider something like this one (not too large, but bigger than the wal-mart one at least):

It's got a similar look as the one you're looking at and its a bit deeper and longer which will add more desk space and viewing distance

I would agree with the "deeper" comment.

It looks like you would have to leave that little "hutch" off the top of the desk.

ikea carries hundreds of desk combinations. If you have one nearby, its worth a look. I have one 2 minutes away, so its easy =)

I like the JONAS from Ikea but I live in Hawaii and we don't have that store. If anyone, can you please help me find a black desk, thats a little smaller (lenth wise) online. I do have room for it to be deep but I dont have much for the length part.

This is a small inexpensive desk from Crate and Barrel that would fit a small space and a 27-inch iMac. The quality of product and customer service from Crate and Barrel would far exceed Walmart. It's hard to imagine putting an iMac on anything from Walmart--that would be a really dissonant juxtaposition. http://www.crateandbarrel.com/family.aspx?c=14236&f=34400

You can get nice plastic top foldable tables from Home Depot or Lowe's, too.

I'm talking about the long plastic white ones with foldable legs. They're cheap enough and provide lots of space.

That only works if you have an IKEA closer than 200 miles away.

OP....that Walmart desk for a 27" iMac is like hanging the Mona Lisa in a 7-11 men's room.

Ikea is definitely a step up. It would only be like hanging a Mona Lisa in Red Lobster bathroom.

I have this desk, the iMac looks good on it. I use the monitor shelf for a lamp, I got one with smokey blue tinted glass instead of clear .

I had a Walmart type desk once, when I moved, the movers refused to touch it unless I disassembled and packed it. They said the desk would break under it's own weight and most movers suggest it is not worth moving them.
